    cooking gas checks...lol

if I spread a bag of 1,00 brass gas checks out on a cookie pan, and set the oven as ghigh as it will go (broil?) would it anneal them properly given they have a hour or two to heat, and then let them cool over night? our oven is pretty nice, with a digital thermometer, so I will know how hot it is ( and how hot it can go) when I try. what is the minimum temp to anneal brass GC's??? thanks!-Travis

I simply take a propane torch, heat 'em until a color change and let them cool. only takes seconds.

If I have trouble with "off size" primers I beat them with a hammer until they fit the primer pocket....if they stick I just hit them harder..if they are too loose I take a center punch and hit them till they swell and are tight in the pocket...and if anyone tries this you are strictly on your own..sort of like my wife's hair dryer where it has a label "do not use in the shower"...got to be smarter than that.

"The grain structure of the brass begins to change - indicating the start of annealing - at just under 500 degrees Fahrenheit. At 600 degrees F, brass will anneal in one hour. At 800 degrees F, brass will take only a few seconds to anneal"

    this help ya any?

I have an old cast iron skillet that I put on the stove top. Fill it with gas checks and turn on the heat. Stir every now and then until all the checks are black and turn off stove. Let cool and store or load.

Never been a follower of annealing gas checks. I've tried them and saw no improvements and feel it's a waste of time.

opos, re-read post, soundguy, that's what I was looking for, thanks a lot! I was hoping that maybe they would stay shinier if I did it in the oven instead of using a torch like I have before. and a thousand "primers in the oven doesn't sound like my idea of a good time opos!lol-Travis

Put them in a small pipe nipple with with quarter sheet of toilet paper, seal ends and heat with map gas torch until red. By adding the paper to use up the oxygen inside the pipe you should eliminate the scale. Brass will anneal by air cooling or quenching, no difference, you just have to reach the right temp.
