    MIHEC 432640 Lyman Devastator RERUN

    Greetings Casting Brethren,

I am on a quest to find a true cast, coat, size and shoot Plain Base 44 magnum bullet that shoots a true 1.5 inch 100 yard group from a rifle with H110, Lil Gun or 300 MP at 1600-1700 FPS and light enough to be pushed close to 1000 with HS6 or Unique in a 4 inch Smith.

At the moment my most accurate load is a 280 WFN that can cloverleaf at 75 yards but turns into 2 inches and rip the ten ring out at 100 yards. I want a slightly lighter and faster load.

Would anyone else be interested in a 432640 Lyman Devastator in the 260-270 range as a solid and a 240-250 as a HP? Seems to be near the specs of the 2011 run.

Photo for reference of a similar run.

    Thanks,

    Bluejay

    Phaesler,

You old guys had it figured out. Us new guys come late to the party want out molds immediately. This buy took over a year to complete.

Do you still have your mold? How does it shoot?

While I like my Mihec 434640 in my Marlin 1894 I doubt it will shoot into 1 1/2" at 100 yards... at least from my Marlin. It is a terrific boolit though and of course a terrific mould as are all Mihec moulds.

And not to deter you but there is a group buy on right now for a Mihec 250 gr. WFN that might fill the bill for you:

    LB,

What load are you shooting in your Marlin?

I have had excellent 50-75yd performance, bang flop, and sub 1" groups, good load of 2400 and let if fly. I wouldn't expect cloverleafs from any straight wall pistol case at 100yds.
The Mihec style was nice, but the NOE run was better feeding IMO.

I'd have to look it up. I generally use IMR4227 as it is useful other cartridges I've loaded as well.

I can't recall the charge gr. weight I used for the 270 gr. Mihec 434640 but it will be 20+ grs. I know that 24 grs. of IMR4227 under a 245 gr. boolit is a fairly warm load.

I did some comparison shooting for accuracy using the Mihec H&G #503 (258 gr.) and the Mihec 434640. The H&G #503 clone was slightly more accurate in that test but not by a lot. it would take a better shooter and more controlled testing to be sure though.

I had wanted to use 300 gr. boolits in the Marlin but found that the styles I tried did not stabilize from my 1:38" twist barrel. They shot reasonably well to 50 yards but much beyond accuracy fell apart badly with some keyholing at 100 yards.

265/270 gr. seems to be about the longest boolit I've had long range success with... not that the Marlin in .44 mag is a long range gun in the true sense. I've settled on the Mihec 434640 as my heavy boolit.

If I didn't have so many moulds for the .44 now I'd be tempted to get one of those Mihec WFN moulds though!

I’d be down for a 434–640 4 cavity plain base. The two cav I have is getting tired.

Something you might want to consider is velocity and rifling twist if you go as heavy as 280 grs.

It just occurred to me that I have not tried downloading those Mihec 434640's. They have been at or near max loads every time I have shot them and so were all the boolits I tried all the way to 300 grs.

Your story is similar to mine in that I had decent accuracy to 50 yards but by 100 yards heavy boolits were keyholing. I had made an adjustable weight mould so reduced weight from 300 grs. down about 10 grains at a time until I got stable boolits out to 200 yards. 265/270 grs. was the weight that did it but pushed pretty hard. I did not reduce loads to see if the boolit still remained stable at longer ranges.

My Mihec 434640 casts beautiful boolits and shoots pretty well but so far my H&G #503 outshot it to 50 yards. Not by a lot but better groups. I have not done that comparison to 100 yards yet and I have not down loaded either boolit.
