    Egyptian Mauser advice.

A friend just picked up this Egyptian Mauser action and barrel. Bolt and action are matching SN. The barrel is just threaded on by hand and when tight the sights are on the bottom, or 180* off. Hmm...

By the photos below what can the group tell us about this Mauser?

What he'd like is a .308/7.62x51 barrel (with or without sights) and a stock. He's not interested in 8mm.

So what are the groups suggestions and/or advice?

I don't know a lot about them but I'm sure the action is from the arsenal Ankara in Turkey . I had one years ago that had that arsenal mark . I'm sure .308 barrels are available maybe check Midway for them .

That is indeed a Turkish Action Mauser made at Ankara Arsenal in 1938. I have had a couple of those in the past and they make nice rifles when the work is done right. They came both in small thread shank barrels( Mod. 96 size) and large ( Mod. 98) thread shanks. Mine has small thread shanks and I put Swedish model 96 barrels on them. Shot like a dream. I would think they would handle .308 Winchester pressure but there are more variations going back to the late 1800's, so check serial number ranges to see just exactly what model you have. james

Thanks for the correction... It's a Turkish Mauser!...

I didn't get the S/N but since it says "1938" on the receiver wouldn't it be a large ring Mauser?

Get a short chambered barrel in 308 and finish the chamber with a finishing reamer. Several companies sell the short chamber barrel that will screw into receiver.

I have two and they are both Small SHANK barrels but it is a Large ring action.
One is still in 8mm and the other was rebarreled to 25-06.
I did do one before in .308

After doing some on line research I think this is a rebuilt 1903 Mauser. The two things that are telling 1.) the raised charging bridge and 2.) what looks like a teardrop shaped bolt handle.

    Am I wrong?

Since the barrel is loose it's easy to see what thread shank you need. Brownells offered short chambered barrels in .308 and 30-06 at one time for the 38 Turks. That's a good start for a decent Mauser sporter. A Boyds stock and the action mods and off to the races. Personally I would barrel it to .308, put it in a plastic stock, and Duracoat the metal for an all weather workhorse.

Having shot a lot of old Turkish 8MM I can say for certain that the rifle is properly headspaced will shoot 308. That Turk 8 is HOT stuff! Should make a dandy sporter.

I think Ken is right, I just don't quite have the memory that I once had, so I am not sure myself. james

Easiest thing is to buy a Remington 700 308 barrel, re-thread it to fit the Turk Mauser

Yeah Skeettx; bless the large shank of the 700. Even with the cost of the threading you are way ahead cost wise for a quality barrel.

The 1903s use a longer than normal "small shank" .700 long if memory serves versus .625 of the regular small shank. Probably not going to find an off the shelf barrel to screw on. That said they are a nice action.

Even with a free action, the finished product will be worth half of what you put into it.

When I rebareled my Turks, I could not find a "Thread On" short chambered barrel because if the shank being longer than my Standard Short Chambered Small ring barrels.
So I just had a Large Ring barrel shank turned down and threaded to fit the Turk action.
That way I could get the caliber I wanted, because most manufactures offer only the calibers that are safe to shoot in the lower pressure small ring actions.

yes, there are two basically different groups of Turkish rifles, the ones they ordered, and the German rifles that came during and after the great war, which are large ring G98 and small ring KAR 98s but of standard sr dimensions.Even the ones they ordered are a mixed lot,but everything was thrown into the pot to produce the 1938s,scrubbed of the original marks and remarked .Which fooled many in the early days, including me,into thinking they were some inferior product, when the $20 Turks were very good value, some with new barrels. They used to be all over the car swapmeets for a couple of bucks, remember one driven into the ground with a dog tied up to it.

The action was made by Mauser Oberndorf.Richbug is correct about the threads.
