    30-06: 311284 equivalent loads for 16.0 2400 w Red Dot, Unique?

My local powder purveyor is out of 2400.

It has been my "learning" powder for shooting CBs. My vintage 03 tgt rifle and will consistently group 10 shots in 1.5 in at 100yds w this load if I do my part w the Lyman 48. To date I haven't had much incentive to try other loads/ powders, but as I said, my local source is out so I need a temp substitute.

My best guess estimation x referencing several old and new manuals is that this load generates a velocity of about 1480.

Trying to match 1480 for 311284 w the powders I have on hand, I estimate 14 grs Unique and 13.5 gr of Red Dot (max load) are close, w Red Dot only generating 1418.

    Comments welcome.

4227 is very similar to 2400 and used by many for reduced rifle. Unique is the closest you listed, but red dot works well at lower velocities.

I have been using 14 grains of Blue Dot under a 311284 as a replacement for 16 grains 2400.
I came across 5 lbs. Blue Dot for $25.00 then needed a way to use it, found this load, I like it better than the 16 grain 2400 load I have used for years.

QuickLoad thinks your ideas of 13.5 grains Red Dot or 14 Grains Unique are right on the money. And nowhere near max pressures -- 28 to 32k psi area. Give 'em a try and see if either one or both don't work for you. The Red Dot has the advantage of halfway filling the case, so a double charge would be very visible, unlike your 2400 load. (I think of such things though I don't worry about them overmuch).

I shoot 13 grains of Unique in my 1917. It’s the only load I shoot in it. Good groups. Hits the steel swingers good. I find it just about right.

If you have the original LYMAN 311672, which looks like this:

try 18.0 grs of Unique (starting load from Lyman #4). It works very well.

In the '03 Springfield with #311284, loads which have shot well for me are 20 grs. of either H- or IMR4227, 23 grs. of H- or IMR4198, 26 grs. of RL7, 30 grs. of IMR3031 or 35 grs. of either IMR4895, 4064, RL15 or Varget.

Some of these are above your desired velocity range, but all are accurate at 200 yards.

13.0 gr Unique works well. Not very position sensitive. I prefer it to 2400.

Just curious, in what? .30-06 or were there others as well, and what bullets? If you have that info.

In the past i used 16 grs SP 2 (French powder) with 200 grs CB +GC for me 30.06.It was good for small groups at 100 meter
Now I use 22 grs Lovex D060 in my 30-06 and .308. Exelent. Its is the cheapest powder in Holland.

13 grains of red dot or 14 grains of blue dot is what I shoot in my .30 cal milsurp rifles.
