I helped a young man sight in his .458 Winchester several years ago. He said it was shooting more like a shotgun (scattered shots) than a rifle. I sat down at a bench and fired 3 shots to check out his zero and find the source of his problems. 3 nice tight shots later I got up and asked him to shoot while I watched. He was not only flinching, but flinching rather badly. He was actually closing his eyes as he jerked the trigger. He confessed that he had never shot anything larger than a .22lr and he had been reading Peter Capstick's books on African hunting and had bought the .458 just because it was a African caliber and he wanted one. He was not going to Africa, he just wanted a big game rifle. I can tell you that a .458 magnum loaded with 500 grain solids will get your attention off a bench. I imagine that a .416 or .470 would be no different off a bench. my experience anyway, james

Back in my much younger salad days at college I was shooting a Mauser at a gun range. Every now and again there would be a tremendous `BOOM`! After shooting a string of 10 I was packing up to leave when this man asked me to help him sight in his rifle. He had a .460 Weatherby Mag. he intended to use in Africa in 3 weeks from then. His target did look like a shotgun had been used. I sat down and managed to do a 3 shot group of about 1" or there about at the 100 yd range. All my shots were just out of the bullseye at 3 o`clock. He said that was good enough for him and packed up his gear and left. My shoulder hurt for most of that week, so I understood why he was flinching.Robert
