    Counterweight ?

Trying out new pic host. I don't generally go out looking for lead, more run across it randomly. This was at a yard/garage sale I stopped by few weeks ago. Weighs 80lbs., along with a 4-5lb plumbers piece. Bought a couple of other things, bundlin, like The TV Pickers, LOL. Ended up having $18/20 in the lead. Anyone ID this? Should be pretty soft?

The presence of plumbers lead makes me think this is more of the same. BHN hardness check would provide some additional information. Even pencil hardness test to determine if it is anything other than plain lead would help.

Counter weights can be most anything but plumbers used plain or solder. If this was a plumbers stash that would be what I would expect this to be. Looks like end of plain foundry ingot.

I picked up a couple of spring loaded prick punches. Spring delivers same force every time. Can compare dimple from known lead to unknown and determine what known sample it matches hardness with. Now that may not tell you alloy, after all Hardball and Lyman #2 are same BHN but it will tell you plain from WW's or printers lead.
Scrap.... because all the really pithy and emphatic four letter words were taken and we had to describe this source of casting material somehow so we added an "S" to what non casters and wives call what we collect.

Kind of hard to claim to love America while one is hating half the Americans that disagree with you. One nation indivisible requires work.
