I believe that the buffalo hunters of old, used the very best they had available, and no doubt would use the what they considered the best if they were hunting them right now, in this day and time.

I like the old calibers and arms myself too, but sure will not be putting anyone down for using the caliber they want to use.

MT Chambers, I agree with you that it is more satisfying to use the period correct rifles. On two of my buffalo I used a Pedersoli 1874 Sharps in 45/70 caliber. The other two was with a Marlin 1895 also in 45/70 caliber. In the Sharps repo I used a Ranch Dog 350 gr. RNFP cast boolit and in the Marlin I used a Hornady 350 gr. FP jacketed bullet. Both loads were backed by 43 gr. of IMR-4198 powder as I do not like cleaning the traditional black powder from my firearms.
My hunting partner's son used his Thompson Center 50 cal. percussion rifle to take his buffalo in South Dakota on the same hunt with me. That bull went straight down also with the neck shot at about 60-70 yards.

As long as it"s legal it"s ethical . If yer ridin a pony bareback and shooting a stikbow with flint stiks you could even say you did it the hard way

Thank you for those photos ! That stirs up the bucket list a bit.

Period correct would also be a lance tipped with a 6" flint head.
Or how about a caliber 75 flintlock... used for at least 100 years before you modernist came along with those contained cartridges.
So in the end.. use what you have. There is no right or wrong caliber.. just your opinion.

Haha. Only earlier way than that would be to just go find a dead one!
