    Anti stink gas checks

hi all. I am casting lee 106 gr swc heads designed for a 38/357. powder coated and sized to 357 for use in a 9mm with 356 bore 4.2 GR BULLSEY.(very accurate) the problem is they smell bad when fired and I have had complaints during steel challenge competition. I cured the paint for over 30 min on one load and it helped some. I would like to try a plain base gas check on the ammo I shoot for the matches. what size would I need and how do I apply them ( I use a lee push through die)

AND, have you tried the bullets without gas check and just lube
    Try some Lee Alox liquid

these are boolits I cast. I have used lee alox for over 20 years. too smokey. I started powder coating and am totally hooked except for the plastic burning smell when fired. I want to try a plain base gas check to try and protect the powder coating from burning. I don't know if it will work but its worth a try. I just don't know the size gc

I have heard of different lubes stinking and different powders stinking, but never heard of a gas check causing a load to stink. What are you making them out of cow patties

Try different powder to coat your bullets. I had some that smelled bad and some that didn’t.

I use the same bullet and coat with Harbor Freight pc. They smell, but not that bad. I also have used them with SPG applied with a Lyman 450 lubrisizer. They are more accurate with the SPG. But they do smoke a little.

You have a real competitive advantage there, if the smell doesn’t bother you. Why give it up?

In high school, there was a kid on our wrestling team who wasn’t all that big or strong, and, frankly, wasn’t all that great a wrestler, but he won most of the marches he was in.

His secret was that he never bathed. They called him “Cyanide Sid.”😜

A gas check will give a tight seal and none of the powder coat will be exposed to the heat from the powder burning. I install a homemade gas check on all my powder coated cast bullets. The bullets are plain base and the gas check is installed by pushing thru the Lee sizing die. The gun barrels are very clean with the gas check.

What powder and what baking temp? You can get the plastic smell from under cured coating. Also the PC will abrade and blow out the barrel. The PC on the base does NOT burn off. I've never noticed the smell shooting PC outdoors. If you're doing well others may be complaining to eliminate you?
    Whatever!

Never noticed a smell even with my PC's rifle bullets. Must be the powder you are using. The stuff I get from Smoke is great. The harbor freight stuff I tried went in the garbage.

I use Harbor freight red in everything from .380 to 500 S&W magnum and don't gas check any pistol bullets. I've never noticed any smell from the PC.

But in an attempt to answer your question, I have to ask, can you gas check boolits that were not designed to be gas checked?

You could shoot that same load lubed without the gas check but your alloy hardness will have to be correct and of course the size will be critical.

The first time I tried A-Lox lubed 102gr in 9mm it didn't go well. It was a classic case of too little lube. I eventually got them to work double lubed, sized to .358" and a hardness of 15 BHN.

I shoot these exact same boolits now with PC at 12 BHN, and sized .356" from the same guns that they didn't work in lubed and they work excellently and shoot as clean as J-words.

Forget gas checks. Just try a different PC.

Sometimes I get hint of burning plastic smell while shooting PC. Not bad and gone in an instant.
