    300 AAC, 300 BlackOut, 125g OTM bullets!

A good year ago or more a customer inquired with me regarding the possibility of making some bullets to match the popular 125 grain OTM bullets. So I had my custom reamer shop cut me a reamer and that was as far as I got for at least the last 6 months or longer. Yesterday I was going threw my oversized dies and recut the cavity of an oversized 22 cal up with this new 30 cal reamer. The results as pictured below pretty much speak for themselves!

There must be a lot of extra room in the nose of the factory 125 grain OTM bullets, you can see that the bullets I made are nearly the same length yet I made mine at 150 grains. I bet there is still room in the jacket nose too. The length of the nose ogive of my bullet is the same as the factory one so feeding in an AR platform should be no problem.

I don't shoot the 300 AAC so those of you that do let me know your thoughts on this bullet and what you think of the 300 AAC. I hear the availability is a bit limited with this particular bullet, having a de set to make your own certainly solves that problem. Looking at the results I might just have to look into a new upper to shoot some of these bullets! I wonder how this bullet profile would do in a longer jacket with a boat tail, say about 220-240 grains shot from a 300WM or larger 30 cal?

Here is the pics. RCE jacketed 150 grain on the left, factory 125 grain OTM center and 150 grain made from Sierra jacket on right. That's a .062 meplat on my bullets. The factory one has been closed in a pointing die.

I will be machining some of these dies starting in January and will have them available for order in 2015!

    Good shooting and swage on!

Had to see what they would look like loaded! Looks pretty good I think, a near perfect match to the factory bullet!

Wow, I like! Swaging is just to expensive for me to get started in tho. 150 is a bit heavy, 125-130 is preferred. The shape is perfect for the blackout.

Do you need a tester? I have 3 BO's here in the valley, and a couple of range memberships.

I'll be able to make lighter bullets easily enough. I'll be sending this die in to be nitride before the end of the month, when I get it back I can make a run of bullets to see how they shoot. If I need some testers I'll let you all know.

BT Sniper I'm envious of your set of tools and skills. Oh and that apparently you live next to a river.

I don't think I can get into swaging right now (maybe never) but I still am fascinated by the things you guys do.

    Stupid question maybe....

can the jacket be trimmed and allow for exposed lead? Making a gameking clone instead?

You could use a shorter jacket and have an exposed lead tip. You would want a PF die though.

BT, will the 30 cal dies you are making for me(2014-009) Do this bullet. Because that's what I need 125 grn all the way up to 220 grn. I am going to swage for my 30-30, 308, 300 BO, and 30-06. I thoungt the 30 cal die would do this pretty well. By the way, full payment coming to you after Wanenmacher's Gun Show in Tulsa this weekend.

Looks nice, very impressive. I have a 300blk SBR (10.5" barrel). I purchased some factory ammo in 150gr. I'll let you know how they work out. I'm going to the range on Tuesday as a selfish veterans day treat to myself.

I think 110grn is preferred for most, You can do double duty both super and sub sonic depending on your powder. If you're looking for more testers put me in line

I'll probably shoot a few of these out of my 300wm with a lite load of trail boss powder. I should be able to get FPS down to the 2200ish range that I recall the blackout is capable of with a 125 grain bullet.

I expect to ship this one die off to nitride first of next week. When I get it back I'll be able to put a fine polish on the die and further test it's capabilities. I want to make sure it will form the 125 grain bullets of this shape perfectly. Then I'll be ready to take orders.

As I understand it the shape of Sierra's 125g OTM bullet as pictured above, is to allow for best use of a light bullet out of the AR platform with the Blackout, that is why the long nose vs. a more traditional ogive???? Maybe some of you with more knowledge on the workings of the BL can chime in on this.

As far as making 220 grain pills for the BL... that is easy enough. You can make them the same shape as traditional commercial bullets of this weight and caliber. A 220grain bullet with the nose of this OTM bullet certainly wouldn't be logical, what you can do if one where to be swaging their own bullets for the BL and wanted to make both these fancy 125 grain pills and subsonic 220 grain pills is get a complete 30 cal swage die set then simply purchase the extra point form die separate since you can use the core seat and core bleed die, etc. for either point form die.

    I'll keep you all posted.

    R.ph.380,

Any of my dies will make a bullet in any weight you wish, within reason. Yes my 30 cal point form dies will make bullets from 100-250 grains.

What you can not change is the profile of the nose shape. For example.... in 30 cal I offer 3 different shapes to the ogive of the nose, a 6.5s tangent ogive, a 10s tangent ogive, and the OTM pictured above is a 16s secant ogive.

Your die will be the 6.5s ogive which is a pretty standard profile for many 30 cal bullets in any weight range. You will have no problem making any weight you wish.

Yes you can always use a shorter jacket to make lead tip bullets. No problem at all! I wouldn't recommend it with the OTM profile but a more traditional 6-7s ogive with a lead tip is easy to do and makes for great bullets.

By design my point form dies allows the user to make either lead tip or hollow point without the need for an additional lead tip forming die.

This one here should be a pretty close copy to the GameKing bullets.
