Ruger Police Carbine Owners - Accuracy

Finally got back out the range with my PC40 this weekend.

Using both factory and handloaded 180gr ammo, I was getting about 3 inch groups at 25 yards. I want to attribute what I consider not so great accuracy to the trigger, which is absolutely horrible, but I still think it should shoot better than that? I know there are at least a couple of other RPC owners on here, just curious on what you've been seeing out of yours.

Have never shot mine. Will probably be a while but I'll weigh in once I get around to it.

Generally Ruger will tell you that the rifle meets their accuracy standards;whatever they are.

    I owned a .40 cal.
One of the most dismal experiences at the range that I've ever had.
I hope I never see another one.

A typical reply from William B. Ruger, Sr. whenever customer service spent "too much time fixing" a return where there was an accuracy complaint,

"It doesn't need to be any better than that, for farm boys who are going to shoot at cans..."

I had high hopes when I bought mine.
I should have done my homework up front , if so, I'd have saved a good bit of money.
    Never again.

Don't give up on it 308Jeff.

Carbines that shoot pistol cartridges, aren't going to be tack drivers.
Their sole purpose is to engage man sized targets with immediate results.
Understanding the limitations of the tool will result in acceptable performance.
I'm confident that you can achieve Zen with plenty of trigger time and experimentation of factory/handloads.

Ruger doesn't make junk. Their products are legendary and in use worldwide.

    Ben,

You're a wizard. I'm sure if you had the time, you could've figured it out.
Always a fan of your efforts.

had a 40 and my buddy has a 9 and a 40. With jacketed bullets they MIGHT shoot a 3-4 inch 50 yard group. My experience with cast and the pc rugers was pretty dismal. What they are is a good VERY reliable gun that combat accurate out of 50 yards. bottom line is that's what they were designed to be. That said I wish I would have held on to mine and I do wish ruger would make another run because on the used market there WAY overpriced. Bottom line (and I'm not a highpoint lover) is at less then half the price of a used pc you can buy a high point carbine that's just as reliable and will probably outshoot the ruger. If ruger would make a run of them and sell them even at 500 bucks I think theyd sell a pile of them. If for no other reason then some think the sun rises and sets on rugers.

I had John Taylor convert a Marlin 1894 Cowboy in .45 Colt to .45 ACP for me. He cut off, set back and rechambered the breech end of the barrel and reworked the lifter. The rifle now has a 22-1/2" barrel and holds 12 rounds in the tube and one up the pipe. It is a reliable 2-inch grouper at 50 yards with iron sights firing cast lead plinker loads and 3" at 100 yards with any decent jacketed factory personal defense loads.

AND its traditional appearance does not "scare the natives..."

I think the generalization that PCC's are inaccurate is painting with far too wide of a brush.

I have one of the cheap & ugly Hi Point 995TS carbines, bought with the cash i got taking a bunch of scrap, old car parts, etc to a metal recycling place. Essentially a "free" gun. My experience mirrors what most HP carbine owners find. It may be cheap, it may be ugly and certainly not the appearance of quality but the darn thing is a fine laser beam simulator! Very accurate and very reliable. The USPSA crowd that shoots PCC would also argue about inaccuracies. Ruger has a long standing tradition of inaccuracy and broad spread of quality across their production.

    A good M1 .30 Carbine would rip a nickel sized hole @ 25 yards.

    Thanks for the replies, all.

In spite of the less than stellar accuracy, I do love the rifle. I was lucky enough to pick mine up for $379.00 back in 2009. It was one of a couple of dozen police trade-ins that a local shop had.

Although the trigger is positively horrible, it has been a 100% reliable gun, and fun to shoot. The only other downside is that nobody makes magazines in 40 cal for the P series pistols/carbines anymore, and they're expensive second hand. Luckily I have 5 or 6 of them.

I'm going to keep messing with it. Thinking about trying some 135 and 155 grain bullets to see how those fly.

At best only one in ten will, with good ammo (not USGI) and tweaked.

This is more "typical" of what you would expect with the average M1 carbine:
