I bought a 1917 from the Civilian Marksmanship Program that had a bad barrel. I got a Criterion barrel and had it put on by a gunsmith in Colorado that hangs out on the Culver's Shooting Page, going by the handle Rick the Librarian. He specializes in the 1917. The rifle now shoots great, but has a problem with vertical stringing after about 4 shots, which is a bedding issue.

At minimum you have some parts for the next 1917 you buy.

Good advise here. Many years ago, I found a 1917 receiver. Safety concerns, I had it magnafluxed, and sure enough it showed up cracked. Ever since, anything I've built up gets checked out first.
