John 3: 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Dang! That old roller can TALK. Its driver can handle a team right well, also.
I don't paint bullets. I like Black Rifle Coffee. Sacred cows are always fair game. California is to the United States what Syria is to Russia and North Korea is to China/South Korea/Japan--a Hermit Kingdom detached from the real world and led by delusional maniacs, an economic and social basket case sustained by "foreign" aid so as to not lose military bases.
Wondered if bigger balls might tighten things up a mite. Thanks for sharing with us.
Paper targets aren't your friends. They won't lie for you and they don't care if your feelings get hurt.
That's what she needed!!! Lol
Bigger balls! Lol again!
That was the ticket. I was amazed.
I still get a little messed up, after the hammer hits, small crack, kaboom!
I own quite a few toys, but this OLE GIRL!
takes the CAKE for me.
You just go back in time shooting her!
Thanks for the kind replies!

Howdy Terryrm,
That's a beautiful old hogleg, and a damned nice group from the old girl.
I've got an Italian replica 1858 Remington and have always found it hoot to shoot.
My accuracy noticeably improved when I upped from .451" RB's to .454." I've never tried .457" in her, but I might at some point in the future.
As it is now, with aging vision as a convenient excuse, I'm happy with 4-inch or so, 25-yard two-hand/offhand groups out of her. She seems to love a dose of 25-to-28 grains of Holy Black, and she sure makes me smile every time I tickle her, eh, bang-switch.
Happy trails,
-- Cary Gunn --
Thanks Cary Gunn! Enjoy that Remington!
I need to get one, let this old original rest!
It's still so fun to shoot the originals and just feel yourself going back in time!
It's so AWESOME!
Thanks for the reply!

Great shooting. I have to wonder if bigger balls would help- you'll just shave a bigger lead ring from the ball when seating it. It still gets sized the same by the loading lever pushing the ball into the cylinder chamber.

isn't a given load of 777, 10 % to 15% more powerful than a regular given black powder load ?
Yes, it is more powerful. These guns were usually filled 35grs BP.
Glad I didn't fill it all the way up.
I did not actually know this, found out on another forum.
Thanks for the heads up.
I'm looking for something else.
Black powder isn't the easiest to get anymore, here in the REPUBLIC OF ILLINOIS.

Terrym1-03, roger that. i just didn't want you have it start to loosen up being so old and surviving this long. if you want to have fun using it, i would suggest cut back to 15 or 18 grains it will get the ball down range to the paper and put a hole in it. the other alternative is to use PYRODEX- RP. in it. you can get it in most gun shops and CABALA'S carry's it. hope this bit of wisdom helps you. see if any of your buddies will sell you a can of 3fff g black?
3,FFFG is the best in any old or new cap & ball revolver, but 2,FFG BLACK will also work. it just takes up more space in the cylinder.
The specs for civil was .44 cartridges are available. IIRC they were loaded with conicals. I don't think there was a standard powder charge. I seem to recall a low of 18 grains on up into the 20"s but don't quote me on that.

I love making old firearms speak again.
Thanks for sharing.
My first BP firearm was a Remington replica revolver in .44 back in 1972.
I could buy the revolver while home on leave, but not the black powder. My grandmother rode with me about an hour or so through open range to buy powder for me. She never flinched. We drove through downed trees as the town had been hit by a tornado the night before. Adventures. BTW, she was the first woman driver to be licensed in Ford County, KS. Her dad being sheriff might have influenced that. I sure wish now I had asked them both much more while I was young and knew everything.
