    Unusual Mauser Conversion

I am following with interest, a friends 'project rifle', a Mauser 98 chambered for 444 Rimless. A simple case of had action and gained a 'free' barrel and now what to do with them.

444 Rimless cases are made by expanding 8mm Mauser to 430 with no other changes and simply loading gas checked 44 Mag cast boolits!
Hold Still Varmint; while I plugs Yer!

I have talked to Pacific Tool & Gage about that. It has been done before. They have a chamber reamer for it.
It headspaces on the case mouth like a auto pistol round. If you are careful with your headspace and brass trim length you can use standard 444marlin dies.
It has been wildcatted so many ways, you have to verify your headspace, dies, and brass.

That is intriguing. I'm pondering a straight wall cartridge to meet Ohio restrictions so as to join my nephew hunting on his new farm. I too have an orphan M98 Mauser....

Keep us posted on your friends progress with that rifle. I for one keenly await updates (and wondering how well it'll feed through the magazine).

I have one. in a box lot there was some cases .50 beo. wolf. they are .50 cal with a head rim of the .8mm .30-06 class. fit a 98 bolt with no problem. would that meet Ohio's rules?

somewhere I have a small ring action and a barrel that is made from a marlin 444 barrel sleeved to a small ring stub...never got around to building that rifle. some folks call this 444-06.

I have often thought of a Mauser with a 8MM blown out straight to take a .452 bullet. I like the idea.
You can miss fast & you can miss a lot, but only hits count.

Neat! Did something similar a couple years back with a 1891 Mauser. The DNR zone I'm in limits rifles cases to .35" or larger, straight walled and 1.2"-1.8" in length. Went with 1.8".
