I smelted two batches of range scrap today. The first one got WAY too hot (800+), I did a much better job controlling the temp on the second batch. My question is, should I be concerned with the first batch? It's not like I was doing WW where I could have missed a zinc one, but is there any inherent risks in getting range scrap too hot?
None that I'm aware of...range scrap should be free of zinc.
If it's not broke, don't fix it. ie- you should be fine
If you have problems with fill out in casting then worry about it; nothing a little sulfur or copper sulfate can't cure.
you can always put a drop of muriatic acid on the offending ingots. look for fizzing. no fiz........... no zinc.
You'll be fine as long as you didn't leave it sit Too long.

Never had a problem with my range scrap melts. I heat it up until it is hot enough to bring motor oil to the flash point and then flux a couple times to get dirt out and metal back in. As stated, if you are having trouble with fill out you need to add something. I would add pewter or solder to the mix for the tin.

Overheating lead makes a hazardous substance. Luckily I have a way to safely dispose of it. Just send it to me and I will take care of it for free.

No, you did not hurt anything. You just used a little more fuel than needed. All in all, a cheap learning experience. Just beware of live ammo!
Ran two more batches through without temperature issues this weekend. Next weekend, I'm going to start in on my buckets of wheel weights.
