    Can't find REAL black powder

My can of 3f Goex is getting low and with a new BP rifle to feed I'd like to get some more. However... the only thing I can find in my area is the dreaded substitutes: Pyrodex & Triple 7. My Traditions Kentucky rifle is only factory rated for Pyrodex and REAL BP. I also have a Uberti 1860 Army 44 that I need to feed and have always shot real black through it. Can't find real black online sooo... which of the substitutes is better for my applications? I can get the P-word stuff in all grades locally. I'm about an hour southwest of Atlanta but I don't want to drive in the madness that is ATL traffic unless absolutely necessary. Suggestions???

You can have BP shipped right to your door - Maine Powder House - 5,10 and 25 lb lots. Very reasonable prices

I buy from Graf. Try to get some guys to go in on a group buy. Saves money.

I am lucky enough to live 2 hours from Friendship,IN where the NMLRA is headquartered. During the Spring and Fall shoots they sell powder.
If this wasn't an option for me, I would use Grafs and just pay the hazmat fees.

Other BP subs will work also. 777 is a little stronger so you use slightly less to even it out. I've used Pyro for years and always worked good for me. BlackMZ is fairly new and people are raving about it and it comes at a right nice price. I bought some and haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I couldn't pass it up at $10 a can.

    I, too, order from Grafs.

Triple 7 is only more powerful than standard Goex and similar powders. It's not quite as powerful as Swiss or Olde Eynsford BP. It doesn't need to be reduced for safety. Only to match the velocity of the weaker BPs.

Grafs house brand of black powder is relabled Schuetzen. Great powder at a great price.

I have no problem using Pyrodex in my cap locks although I do prefer Holy Black and use it exclusively in my Flinters.

Ask around and try to hook up with some reenactor guys. they know where to get black powder and usually have a pretty good supply and may be able to spot you a pound or so. I usually call Back Creek to find out when they are doing business and go buy there when making the annual fall leaf and craft tour vacation in the Blue Ridge. 10

Squatch, that is where I get my bp. 100 miles one-way for me, but I stock up when I go. Usually take my 1400 Concours and just enjoy the ride!

Make your own. The sticky above has more info than any were on the net. You can make your own for less than
$5 a lb. It shoots as fast as factory. Believe me there are many here that started making there own because they
did not want to pay $25 hazmat fee plus shipping.

Buffalo Arms also sells black powder delivered to your door. One thing to do if you can is get several friends together and increase order size to the 25 lb or 50 lb case groups, this gets a price break and the same haz mat fee lowering the hazmat per pound cost. Buffalo arms allows mixed cases of powder brand and granulation both. I believe they carry Goex, Olde Ensforde and Swiss.

On visit to VA a few years ago I made an appointment to buy some powder from Blackcreek. The owner & I had a nice conversation. I would from from him again in a heartbeat.

There's also Upper Missouri Trading in Crofton, Nebraska and Coonie's in New Mexico. I've bought from both of them with complete satisfaction. Track of the Wolf sells it as well as several other places. Best way to beat the hazmat is order in a case lot. That adds only $1.00 a can and you're still buying it cheaper than at retail.

    Thanks for all the replies!

Fly, I started looking at the sticky on making your own but haven't gotten far enough into it to feel comfortable making it yet. The cost is appealing but right now I don't have the time to invest in making it so might just buy a can of Pyrodex at the local sporting goods store to get me by.

for perhaps 90% of us who use black only, thank gawd a'mighty there are bp vendors who will mail order - and that the feds will allow the explosive to be shipped to private citizens - SO FAR.

for those loading cartridges or who have percussion muzzleloaders, that fake smokeless bp will do, i guess ... but NOT for flintlocks!

just mail order the holy black and be done with it and pay the dang BOGUS hazmat fees. that added cost can be mitigated by making a group order with local like-minded folks, mostly in gun clubs ... or by ordering out 25# or more.
