Crater Fireworks also sells black powder by mail order. I got a nice aluminum beer can cozy from them with my order.

It's only a brave and committed gun store (typically one specializing in muzzleloaders and supplies) that is willing to comply with all the storage regulations the various local, city and state bureaucracies cook up in order to stock black powder for customers. And the customer pays for that extra work; a can of Goex from our local store costs as much as a pound of Swiss if the latter is purchased online.

I had to Mark up Goex to $22.00/lb when my store was still standing.

Just recently I saw the hazmet quoted at $32.00.

Thanks jd, I wondered when I typed the $1.00 a can if perhaps it had gone up since I last ordered. Still that's just $1.28 a can if you order in 25 lb. lots. I used to shoot so much BP I ordered it by the case just for me and even with the added Haz-Mat it ended up close to $150.00 savings over retail. I felt like the savings alone justified it.

Well being a Pyro guy myself here is the problem with using pyro powder. Cleanliness is a problem with that powder. In fireworks bp is the
holy grail for sure. We use it for lift powder for our night time effects & for busting those shells. So we could care less how clean it burns. Charcoal
is the key to clean & fast powder. Most Pyro coal is made from white pine. White pine burns very fast but is nasty dirty in a fire arm.

The coal I use is black willow, but there are other options a gun powder can be made from. But most pyro coal is white pine for it is cheap &
plentiful. Most I have seen is also screened with a binder added & not corned. Just to let you know.

Fly - I believe that he was referring to PYROdex, the BP substitute.

Crater Fireworks has a selection of different types of BP. He is a licensed fireworks manufacturer. He does the fireworks for many of the areas festivals. He is about 40 minutes from me so I just drive over.

He has several buildings he stores everything in. They are set apart from each other by a good distance in case something happens. And he always throws in some swag when you buy stuff.

I just bought 3 lb.s of Old Enysford from Graf and Sons. With hazmat and shipping still cheaper than what I can buy it for. I can't find it locally and can't' count on it being in stock when I drive to the city.

I also buy Olde E from them. I appreciate the sing it has compared to most other black powders.

Broke down and bought a 1lb can of Pyrodex RS to test. I did it mostly so I could save my 3f for my 1860 Army .44. If the Pyrodex shoots good in my rifle, I'll use it until I can decide whether I want to order a big lot of real black or make my own.

    Thanks for the advice everyone!

Do you have a Bass Pros or Cabelas near you? They usually carry BP. You have to ask though because they can't keep it on the shelf because of restrictions. Also if you ask I would suggest asking the dept manager because regular sales clerks usually don't know about of it since it is not sold much.

The nearest Bass Pro Shop is about a two hour drive from me so not very convenient.

Indeed. My truck gets about 18 mpg on the highway. A two hour drive one way, figuring it about 125 miles, would use almost 14 gals of gas. At something like $2.40/gal that's $33.60 to get there and back. And if they didn't have my favorite flavor then what? And that's precisely why I like ordering it (3 lbs at a time from Grafs) as I used to drive 30 mins to BassPro for 3F T7 but wasted my time and effort for several months when it wasn't in stock.
