Im am thinking about using 30-06 cast 180 grain bullets in a savage axis but my question is how fast can i make the bullet go and be consitant? I have herd that you need to lower the velocit of cast bullets is that true?

I'd use a flat nose design and start at around 1600fps. and work my way up as long as accuracy holds out. I am used to having to try many diff. molds until I get the accuracy I want.
Using slow powder I have gotten loads that chronoed 2000 fps. Others here have done much better than that.
Paper targets aren't your friends. They won't lie for you and they don't care if your feelings get hurt.
If you go down the rabbit hole of gas checks and powder coating I have pushed 2700 fps with no leading and decent accuracy.

You can be consistent at 500 fps. The question is what do you want to do with the gun? Hunt game, target shoot, small game of just burn lead?

Yes, please define your concept of consistent?
