    ??? 358318 Lyman

I'm trying to find out info on this boolit as an elk round. It weighs in at 252 grns acww, checked and lubed. I have shot some in my Whelen, and the loads were really accurate. I didn't have a chrono at the time, so I can't say what vel. was. I would like to know if anyone has used this boolit for hunting. Although this is a rn boolit, the top punch I used flattens the tip and kinda gives it a meplat. As I live here in N.E. Oregon, I need something that will allow me to make 200 yard kills, there is a lot of open country around here and our seasons aren't that long. Sometimes if you want to fill the freezer, you need to take the longer shot. I'm guessing I will need to be in the 2000-2100 fps range to make this doable? Any info, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Given my muzzleloader's effectiveness of my sabots with a 260 gr SWC (429 cal) on elk at a terminal velocity of 1350 fps, I would think that yours at the same terminal velocity would give you even more penetration at 200 yards. Have a great hunt!

currently I have straight WW air cooled. I don't have a hardness tester, but I don't think that I want them any softer than that. Mabey they need to be harder??? I have recovered 1 muzzle loader bullet, and several j words from elk. I think that I would want some expansion, with complete pass through.

it would depend on your velocity as to wether or not to heat treat them, but if they are accurate I think they are ok and should expand at least some, doubt you will get a full "mushroom" though.Good luck!-Travis

If you can put a metplat on it and it is accurate at your 200yd requirement I would think you're going to need a knife for butchering.

Here are some links to the work I have done with the NOE copy of the 358318

    http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...ion-in-358-Win

I did shoot a whitetail doe at about 220 yards with the cup hollow point version. I did not get full penetration but brought the old gal down quickly.

    Good luck with your hunt!

FWIW, I shoot the 358318 in my 358 Win Savage bolt gun. 24" Douglas 14 twist
    Cast them of 9+1 Ww/lino.
Then size them thru 0.360 die, no lube.
I Paper Patch the bullets and then spray them with dry Teflon,
    resize thru 0.360".
My load of 43 gr 3031, Clocks 2350fps across my Oehler 33.
Kills Wi deer very well, always pass thru, and not too destructive of meat,
even on my "Anchoring" shoulder shots
