This afternoon I got a call , and asked if I would be interested in his Grandfather's Loading Powder .....Well
He came by and it all stayed in my Gun Room LoL Lots are unopened full containers .........Any Issues of
loading and shooting as Normal !!! Can anyone tell age by the containers ????? Thanks for your help Ol Deuce

The square pound Hercules cans date back to the 1970s, but double-base powders are quite stable and should be fine.
Metal caddy of Unique is same era and should be OK. Paper caddies which say Hercules, rather than Alliant are later.
The DuPont IMR and SR powders date before 1976, but is OK if there is no rust in the cans and you get a normal solvent smell.
Only can there may be some concern with is the pink Hodgdon can, as that was surplus powder and you don't know how old it was when packaged. If it looks and smells normal, it is probably OK.

The black plastic containers are modern for sure. The 1 pounders of IMR and SR powders could date back to the 80's and 90's for certain. Winchester used metal cans for years also. More importantly is the condition of the power. If stored in a stable mild temperature it will last for decades. The red metal can of Unique is the oldest, others can correct me if I am wrong. I'd use the oldest first. The cardboard containers of Unique are the 2nd oldest as far as the Unique is concerned. What a gift to receive and you have an interesting cross section of powder history and containers. All good stuff and will need to dig into the older powder and reloading manuals for a couple of them. Again, nice find.

Thanks You Guys .....The one 4lbs cardboard container is stilled sealed and no water damage to any !!! When I do the smell test should I open the sealed one

It's all bad and I can come pick it up for disposal free of charge!The pink Hodgdon can has to be BL C2, I don't quite understand the Dupont IMR and SR metal cans have to be pre 1976? Typo I think
Edit: I don't remember for sure but seems Dupont moniker was still on the cans until the millenium???

I would be envious except I'm still sitting on more powder than I have time left to use. I bought it when Obama was elected the first tiem. I'm hoping my sons will take up reloading.

THIS is one of those situations in which you REALLY want to heed the recommendation, "Reduce all starting loads by 10% and work up gradually". If there IS something wrong with the powder that's not detected by smell and texture checks, the work-up should show it.
