    Press just dumped 1# powder

    Just venting here.

I cleaned out my LnL press and got it ready for a run of 41 Mag tonight so I can hit the range tomorrow. I wanted to replicate my hunting load from last year and got everything ready, dumped in a pound of 4227 in the hopper, got everything set up and away I went. About 20 rounds in, the plastic hopper had worked itself up and out and dumped the remainer of the powder everywhere. I've had tons of problems with this press in the past to the point the Hornady reps have made comments about how many issues and small parts I've had. I just replaced the base plate as a "wear item" about 2k rounds ago because the ez-ject quit working (at my expense). Anyhow. Powder cleaned up. Tube put back in place and TAPED down and I was able to finish up my loading. At least the other powder I had was from the same lot.

Never dumped a pound but I hate losing powder unless it's burned!

    Osteodoc,
I know exactly how you feel having had the same problem with my LnL. The clear plastic hopper kept coming off the base spilling powder everywhere. Not only do you lose powder, you must clean it out of every part of press to get it operational again. My solution was simple: I found some red electrical tape that kind of matched Hornady’s red, and taped the bottom of the hopper to the base. It ain’t pretty but it works. You’d think for the price they get for their press that they could at least include the tape.

It hasn't happened to me YET, but I will tape it down now. Thanks for the heads up, sorry for your problems.

I've been happy with mine so far, even gave up my turret press finally.

I actually use my turret now more than the LNL. I got ticked at the priming system and started hand priming.

I do not use the factory powder setup for the Hornady
I have switched it out for the Lee Auto Disk Powder measure.

You would be surprised how well it works for pistol ammo.
No linkages, not angle modifications, only the case to lift the drop tube.
    No case, no powder

Heh, guilty, I use my lee auto disk on the lnl occasionally too. Most of my original load work ups reference the lee disk cc size and not the actual powder weight.

I can see where the LEE would work…. however, the problem I have with their Disc system is the gaps in powder throws between Disc sizes. When Loading rifle and Mag pistols I want to be dead on in powder weight not “just close”. While the Hornday powder dispenser can be a pain in the ****, with the optional powder micrometer I can dial in chargers that are consistent and repeatable within the .1 gr tolerance that I think necessary. On the other side, I’ve never had to tape my old Lee powder dispenser to keep it working.

That plastic tube softens with some powder especially unique. the newer ones seem
like a different type plastic like maybe lexon. But both mine are taped. I do have two of these presses and that powder feeder tube is the only issue except I had plate that was not machined properly they replaced it no charge. One of those presses is setup for 10mm only the other I switch out to a wide variety of different calibers.

Wow. I see I'm not the only one this has happened to. Literally after this had happened I wanted to take the whole thing and toss it in the trash.

It's not a bad press itself. It's the supporting hardware I've had issues with.

I guess that way your used to leaking powder on your press! I actually prefer the hornady measures over any of them and would prefer them to even the Dillons on my 550s. The hoppers do come loose though as they have done on rcbs measures for me in the past too. I small dolup of silicone when sticking it back on keeps it in place and will still let you remove it if yours breaks and you need to replace it. It would also be pretty simple to drill and tap a set screw to hold it. Sure doesn't justify using a lee dispenser!

I noticed mine coming before I had a spill. I cleaned both surfaces & epoxied the the hopper back. It's been probably 2 years & hasn't come loose.

I've also had issues with some powders (Unique) with light loads that just don't meter well. The Hornady, even with its issues, allow better flow adjustment. With all that said I like and regularly use my LEE powder dispenser but only when close is good enough.

What I did also. For many rifle loads I use the double disk kit. For tweaking volume I have resorted to 2 methods, a set screw in the cavity wall or rat tail file to enlarge the cavity. Duplicating loads is easy as I document the cavities used.

IMHO the Hornady measure is too heavy for use on the AP press. These work best when in a stand and activated by hand using a lever.

I don't know how we ever shot maximum loads before P/C come along and saved us all. R5R
