Lightbulb Scoping an 1891 Argentine with drilling and tapping

Can't see tiny iron sighta any more, so what to do ?

Looking at the 91' and doing some measuring lit the lightbulb !

The real sight has the same width as a common Weaver base.

Dug around in the "never throw anything away" box and came up with a Weaver base with the same contour as the front receiver ring. Some JB Weld put it in place.

A pair of Burris (?) rings to fit Weaver bases completed the mounting setup.

A decent 2-7 IER scope bought on Ebay for 60 bucks went in the rings.

The Leupold bore sighter said a bit of up shimming in the front ring was needed. Had I spent the big bucks and bought the Burris Signature rings with the plastic inserts, the available eccentric inserts could have been used to avoid shimming.

The front scope ring carries the load as it is tightly on the rear sight leaf. The rear one is just to locate the rear ring.

Off to the range with some 4759 cast boolit loads today to see how it works.

I had my Argentine done many years ago.
The Bolt Handle was cut & re-welded back to clear scope.
We used a Mark II safety, but I replaced it with a Buehler.
I guess now they are called Timney.
The scope was an old Weaver K-4.
Bases are Weaver, and not sure what rings are.

I like it. And that cartridge is as close to ideal as it gets. It still looks modern combared to its rivals.

The cartridge was a .308 Winchester, before the .308 Winchester became the .308 Winchester! LOL Actually, I guess it's a little closer to the .300 Savage, in terms of ballistics, but I suspect the Argy has taken some pretty serious African game, when needed. If the rifles made their way down to the Belgian Congo, I have a feeling the colonial authorities didn't feel at all unarmed with them.

Tried it with 25 gr of 3031 and Lee Mosin bullet PCed no GC, 2x1" @ 50. Same load w/150 .311 jacked, 10 in 2" 7 in 3/4".

Load was too light as was getting blowback through striker hole (a'int a 98 when it comes to gas) ALWAYS wear shooting glasses.

Upping load to Pet Loads 3031 load, MTF.

I modified a Leupold base to fit the rear sight of one of my "sportered" M91s. I put a Redfield 3X pistol scope on it. It's also D&T'd for a Lyman SME receiver sight and I modified the front base to take an M14 front sight. The Bolt handle is forged and I installed a recoil pad. She shoots cast extremely well and is partial to the 314299 over 4895 with a Dacron filler. I call her "Evita".......

Dang Larry was ya running short on those .312 Hornadys, I mean 3 shot groups!!!!!!!! I like multiple 5 shot groups and then 10 shot groups to test accuracy.

mine seems to like the 314 also but it dotes on H-322 with a filler of dryer lint.
I usually shoot 7 shot groups though.

they all like the 175gr swaged bullet made from 5.7 cases on top of 35.6 grs of 4895 [no Dacron] but I gots no scope [unlike Littlegirl] so I keep the shots on the ground squirrels under 150 yds mostly.
they also like the 30-180sp mold from rcbs but that's probably because I opened the mold to 312 and use soft copper rings [.475 long] to make tubing bullets for deer hunting.
same load of H-322 as the 314 mold but I use the LEE crimp die on them for better ignition.
