New 41 mag Smith, Lyman 410459, and unique

Picked up a new 57-6 smith the other day and broke out an old unused Lyman 410459 220 grain 4 cavity mould I had. I made a pile of bullets with it and it cast about .412 with range lead plus 2 % tin. I am going to try 9 grains of unique to start with. Any loads will be appreciated

Lyman's 4th edition of the Cast Bullet Handbook doesn't show the 410459. The 210 and 220 grain bullets they do show have starting loads of 8.0 to 8.5 grains of Unique and max loads of 9.1 to 9.5 grains. You might want to start around 8 grains and work up slowly.



The 3rd edition does show the 410459 with a start load of 8.1 and a max load of 11.2 grains of Unique. BUT it has a OAL of 1.700 and is suitable only for Contenders.

I load a Saeco 411 (41 cal 230gr SWC) boolit to a COAL of 1.700 (crimped into crimp groove) I need that length in my 41 Mag Henry Big Boy to cycle somewhat reliably and that length will just barely work in my older S&W 57, the boolit nose is right at the end of the cylinder.

As to loads -- 800X works well and Herco both can go down very low and can be loaded up

I haven't clocked any loads in the Henry yet.

I'm still working out the Bugs, I may have a mechanical issue, I have a few ideas what might be happening, but it's been put on the back burner...I am in the "Thinking Phase" of how I should proceed. I don't really want to go into the details just yet, and when I do, I'll start a new thread.

Tried the Lyman bullet with 9 grains of unique yesterday and got good groups at 25 yards in a smith 57-6. Dinged a 100 gong with no problem. Great Bullet ! Purchased the gun because I had the moulds! That's how twisted my logic is

That is not twisted thinking, that is ballistic logic. A mold by itself is not worth much. By purchasing a pistol, brass and reloading equpment, you give it value while at the same time boosting the economy. It is selfless thinking like this that has made America strong in the past and will do so again in the future.

Feel free to print and memorize this when next you have to explain a firearms purchase to SWMBO.

Me too. With the 210 grain SWC designs, it duplicates the old police load that was issued for use in the Model 58 service revolvers. Great load.

90% of my 41 Magnum loading has been done with 8.0-9.0 grains of Unique under a Lyman #410028.

When I got a model 58 and the 410459 mould , I wrote to Guns and Ammo asking for a load to take tin cans and targets more in line with the police load not the magnum load. I sent a stamped self addressed envelope and hoped for an answer.
Elmer Keith wrote " Try 8 gains of Unique" on my letter, signed his name and sent it back to me.
I still use 8 grains of Unique, I haven't found anything better. Try it .

I run 8.5 gr of Unique with that Lyman 220 gr mold in my Ruger B/H 4 5/8 works good for me
