My guess is monotype alloy. Very hard, very hard indeed. Lots of antimony. Very desirable stuff.
I thought it might be the case but I just don't know. I'm going to sell it and didn't want to misinform anyone.
Thanks
Phil
Monotype is my Guess! I am not sure either.
How much in weight do you have?
Drop it on concrete, the higher the pin the harder the alloy or you could do a hardness test with pencils
or take it to a salvage yard with an X-ray gun and get reasonable analysis

Only way to be sure is xrf. Are they 4" or so long and linked in 3 to a bar? I would bet that it is plus metal It would get added to depleted linotype to bring tin and antimony back up to snuff. 14 tin and 7 antimony was typical for plus metal. I have a stash of plus metal but mine is from the imperial foundry
I have been in the print industry for over 35 years and collected quite a bit of stuff along the way. It works very well to sweeten up soft lead for bullet casting
There are two bars linked together and the total length is 8". I've got about 33 lbs of it (10 bars). I'm going to sell it. I've got a decent idea what lead, ww, and linotype will bring, but have no idea about the value of these bars. What do you guys think?
thanks
Phil
