Scrapyard find. Looks pretty clean, though...
The fracture does not look right for lead. How does it melt and see what the splatter of a drop looks like. Probably should do the acid test to see if it is a zinc alloy casting on the cable end.

I dunno, lead w/ high antimony can kinda look like that

Looks like a pot metal handle off an old fridge, the cable went to the latch...
^^^^^the sideways ones that pulled out before pulling the door open ^^^^^
It would help to see the whole thing
There was 100 ft of it, so it must have been a big fridge! It bends easily, and thuds rather than rings when you hit it so I doubt it is zinc, but I will acid test tomorrow...
If there was a hundred feet or better it might be part of a wrought fence. I agree, it doesn't look like lead.
A vote for anyone other then the conservative candidates is a vote for the liberal candidates.
So it failed the acid test. Most likely zinc. I did think it looked a bit shiny to be lead, but I could still bend it by hand, pretty much in half without breaking, which threw me off. Not sure how someone it broke to begin with. Kudos to the grain pattern recognition. I haven't refined that skill quite yet. Glad I didn't buy the whole lot! The scrapyard might trade me out for the few lbs I did buy. Still curious as to what it is used for....
well sorry about your luck silver!

Yeah, sorry it was not useable to you. I'm still curious what it was? We, as casters and scroungers, turn up lots of odd stuff!
Figured it out! Zinc ribbon anode

So, ah, the hooked end was just a "red herring"? LOL, kept us amused for a while though.
There are some folks on the site that buy zinc. Depending on how much you have, and rather or not you want to ship it.
You might get near what you paid for it back. : )

To test for pot metal, ding it against a Lee reloading press, if both break, it's pot metal.
I was back by the scrap yard today. They bought the zinc back at .05/lb haircut so I was out a whole quarter or there about on the experience. Saddest part was they had just shipped all their lead, so I had nothing else to pick through!
