The fracture does not look right for lead. How does it melt and see what the splatter of a drop looks like. Probably should do the acid test to see if it is a zinc alloy casting on the cable end.

There was 100 ft of it, so it must have been a big fridge! It bends easily, and thuds rather than rings when you hit it so I doubt it is zinc, but I will acid test tomorrow...
If there was a hundred feet or better it might be part of a wrought fence. I agree, it doesn't look like lead.

No, antimony would have a very fine grain structure. Almost powder like with tiny facets to sparkle. This is more coarse, not likely lead, but more likely pot metal. That is why the melt test would be desireable. And of course, rule out the presence of zinc.
So it failed the acid test. Most likely zinc. I did think it looked a bit shiny to be lead, but I could still bend it by hand, pretty much in half without breaking, which threw me off. Not sure how someone it broke to begin with. Kudos to the grain pattern recognition. I haven't refined that skill quite yet. Glad I didn't buy the whole lot! The scrapyard might trade me out for the few lbs I did buy. Still curious as to what it is used for....

There are some folks on the site that buy zinc. Depending on how much you have, and rather or not you want to ship it.
You might get near what you paid for it back. : )

To test for pot metal, ding it against a Lee reloading press, if both break, it's pot metal.
I was back by the scrap yard today. They bought the zinc back at .05/lb haircut so I was out a whole quarter or there about on the experience. Saddest part was they had just shipped all their lead, so I had nothing else to pick through!
