Is there a somewhat common case/cartridge/chamber like a 32-40 but tapering to 30cal instead of 32cal? Seems like it would be a good chamber for a single shot.

I traded into a Francotte (In my ignorance of the two I called it a Martini for years until corrected by someone more knowledgeable) some years ago and luckily a couple of cases came with it.
Took me a while to stumble into correct way to make brass.
I at first assumed that it was 30-357Max (Jim Rock) , but after getting the dies found that it was not the chambering.
For lack of knowing what it really was (original owner was deceased crusty OF gunsmith) I stumbled into making the brass using 30X221 dies and leaving a LONG neck with the shoulder at "about" (maybe the same, can't remember) the 30X221 location.
Trimmed a bit too, but I forget now how much.
I was able to ascertain that the barrel had come from a 308 barrel he used in competition and had set back more than once as the throat deteriorated.
Had holes D&T several placed for the different interations.
Shot well, but I have let it languish for years.

The best and closest to what you describe is the .32-40 Remington, which is actually a .30 caliber at .308"-.309" bullet. Why Remington called it a .32-40 Rem. is puzzling to me. It was introduced by Remington in 1870.
Theres the 30 carbine, it has a small neck to it but is essentially a tapered case.
actually pretty nifty too.
I think it's a much hated on round largely because of application issues in the past. I personally like it.

This is a drawing of that cartridge ......I had one and posted a picture on ASSRA and now I can't find it ...I did take the case apart and put the callipers to it!!

I looked high and low and I'll be darned if I can find that .30 Schwartz cartridge. One more place to look- the storage shed, but it'll take a day or two to get to it. In truth, it looks just like the one in the pic above.
The 32-40 Remington has head dimensions like the 30-40 Krag. I had one in a Remington Hepburn and bought the RCBS forming set. Starter case was the 30-40. Boy, do I miss that little beauty!
I found that cartridge in a second hand shop 10 or so years ago ! I collect odd bullets...... when I took it apart I found ??? a small charge of ???fast burn
powder and the case is a winchester case....I also found a German drawing of this cartridge ,which I still need to locate and I will post it also!! If you have
a chamber it would be really easy to make the rounds !!!! I could do it with no problem !!!

When I had a Remington in the .32-40 Rem. I also used .30-40 Krag cases to form them. I simply lubed them up and ran them into my .32-40 Rem. dies with ease. Never knew they needed a forming die as the shoulder knocked down without an issue. Didn't even anneal them first. And I miss that Rolling Block too! Stupid to sell it.
Thank you all for your comments. Now another question. I have a barrel chambered 30-30. Could I expect one of the mentioned straight cases to shoot better than the bottlenecked case? I would be mostly breach seating as I do with the 30-30. The Remington sounds good as I would not have to set the barrel back (would I?).
I haven't checked chamber drawings, but I don't think a 32-40 Rem would clean up a 30-30 shoulder.
I've cut down the rim on the 30-40 and it's just enough for the extractor to latch onto !!! sad thing is I blow the side out !!! the 30-40 case

Correct. The .32-40 Rem. wont clean up the .30-30 shoulder.
