    "JM" Stamped Winchester

I was on Gunbroker looking at the lever actions. I put "JM" in my search terms. I noticed something odd. Someone is selling a "JM" stamped 94 Winchester. He made it a point to mention it. I know what the "JM" means on a Marlin, but this is new to me. I'm withholding judgement until I find out if this is significant.

Marlin stated in their 1900 and 1901 catalogs that they could rebore some bbls of smaller calibers to larger calibers and fit them to (lever) actions. They speak of "the changes being made in a Marlin repeater" though.

Perhaps the service was done to a Winchester product in this case,,a favor to an employee or the request/(demand?) of a Marlin white shirt . A Marlin proof would not be out of place if they had done the work.
(Stevens used to offer rebore work about the same time and would perform it on most any make of firearm of the period.)

Another possibility is a Marlin bbl aftermarket refitted to a Winchester action,,
But the Marlin bbl address would seem to be worth mentioning in the ad as much as the JM proof mark. Or maybe not if they're just trying to get your attention!

    Just some thoughts.

Thanks for the link. I see no JM marks in any of the pictures, it's just some dude trying to make it something it's not, rare! False advertisement, if it had such stamp, you think he would have show it in the 31 pictures. What I do see, Is a vey well used beat up post 64 $250 rifle tops! But hey everyone is entitled to there opinion, cause here lately thats what those class of rifles have been selling for around here on the used market. There not collectors, those are truck rifles at best!

I think he is just adding search terms that will get him more views.

I'll bet it is a WP mark being looked at upside down. Part of the P may be fainter than in the attached photo.

That sounds like the most likely thing, and trying to cash in on it is, among other things, ingenious. Another thing is that it could be a mark applied to rifles sold to a particular dealer. You find that on rifles retailed by some Australian dealers, applied I believe by Winchester, but I don't know if they did it for any US sales.

bcp nailed it. That there is a Winchester proof mark seen on millions of Wincesters.

At that price he'd be clueless, but asking $478.99 he is hoping for the clueless. He has a perfectly logical reason for what he is doing. He wants the money!

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that felt this way. When I first saw it, I got a little PO'ed. After a few minutes I decided to ask around. You never know until you ask. After all, I am wrong at times. Thanks for all the posts.

Oh I just missed one in 44-40 at the gun show Saturday. That's what they told me. I believe them why would they lie?
I was bummed. I guess it was autographed by Randy Jackson of American Idol fame with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Babe Ruth and everything.
I'm just tellin' you what I been told. I just wish I'd have gotten there earlier!
