Powder coat gun

I recently started casting for 9mm and wanted to powder coat everything. I received my powders in yesterday from eastwood (kawasaki green and black) and tried the shape and bake method. I was extremely disappointed in my test batch. I coated 10 boolits in black and 10 in the green. I used a cool whip container and the black powder didn't want to stick very good. The green just seemed thin.

I was offered a harbor freight powder coating gun which I will try next, and was wondering how well it works and if there are still issues I have to watch out for.

Did you add some Airsoft BB's to the mix? That seems to be the trick to creating static electricity. I tried PC last week for the first time and got really good results.

Also the type of BB's seems to make a difference. I started with some from Duhnams and the pc would not even stick to the BB's. I then got some black ones from Smoke and and all worked fine. I also tried the black BB's from Wally world and they also worked.

I used white Airsoft BB's. Of course I had to buy a bazillion of them but they worked just fine. I swirl them around in the bowl for about a minute before adding the powder and bullets.

I haven't tried the bbs. I am really looking forward to the free powder coat gun. I hope it will give a nice even coat work no bare spots.

You can get bare spots, just take your time and spin the tray 90° each time you spray. I just came in from doing a batch of spray bullets. For giggles I tumbles a few and stood them up. I'm hard pressed to guess as to which got the better coverage.

The tumbling took some time for me to get down. Correct tumbling bowl, some plastic BB's, good quality powder is a must for tumbling and getting the swirl and shake method down pat.

I'm a perfectionist so any little bare spot drives me crazy. I just hope it works great and I finds a color I like.

Make sure you get a good ground connection. Also, watch your distance, as it will arc to ground if you get too close and that'll get your attention.

I found making a tub out of ABS pipe works well, I do use BB with it. Read about it on a Canadian gun forum and gave it a try, used it ever since.

Here is my free never used powder coat gun. I was told it is about 3 years old but never opened. I'm going to start coating and baking soon

Couple of hints for you .
Take the round button ( defuser) of the end of the gun.
Spray at about a 45 degree angle
Air pressure should be about 3 to 5 lbs for good fine powders and 5-8 lbs for harbor freight powder. This will save a lot of the overspray wasted powder
And repeat you need a good ground

I took the defuse off, but ran into a problem getting bullets of tray. At first the pc almost rubbed off when I was trying to knock off tray, second I don't know if I used too much powder, but the bullets are stuck to the powder that was at the bottom where non stick foil was. See pic

way way too much powder .. And use non stick aluminum foil ..

You may want to spray then transfer them to a cooking sheet still use the foil. Yes it takes more time but saves you some trouble such as flashing at the base. I also recover the over spray and reuse it. As one batch is baking you can be working on the next if you have enough trays.

Thanks for the replies. PC gun definitely coats better IMO, but I will try transferring to another tray after spraying
