New – vs- old powder

WHY SHOULD WE TRY THE NEW POWDERS?

Our old favorite powders/loads have kept us happy and put meat on our tables for a long time.

Are they; cleaner, cheaper, more accurate, more versatile, have a catchier name or just because they are new??

Some companies try to/create powders similar popular powders, even mimicking their names to gain market share.

I think it would be nice if the powder manufacturers had ¼ pound containers of the new powders we could buy and try before committing to a larger container.

I have about 3 1/2 pounds of bullseye, and 3.9 pounds of unique left in 4 pound kegs that I bought in the mid 60's. I used some of the bullseye to load some 38 sp shotshells a few months ago.

I've got plenty due to the shortage I started reloading during. I'd buy a lb of each and see what worked for what situation. Still not quite sure how to use up the bluedot, and unique is just a pain trying to meter out. Ramshot Zip and Silhouette are another 2 I have tried out and not really done much with. Trying to use up what i have before I restock another round.

I seem to have this problem too. I use the 1 or 2 pounds of what turned out to be not so good for plinkers on the days I want to play and not be too concerned with accuracy. Seems like I never run out of not so good stuff because I'm always trying to find another really good load.

Yup, during the shortage I bought powders I would not have otherwise bought. Pretty sure I have a lifetime supply so trying to shoot up the odd ball stuff first. Talk about bad metering, 700 & 800X are the worse! To the OP, I have a tendency to want to try the new stuff which I really need to resist. I like Hodgdon Powder and have been really proud of myself for not giving into the urge to try some of their new powders.

I load shot shells , and it is a good way to use up powders mentioned above .

I think the old standby powder works just fine , but they have been altered over the years Unique and Red dot come to mind . I had a buddy talking about this great powder he was loading with a few years ago Varget so I ordered a few new reloading manuals . I was surprised most of my old powders were not included in the new reloading manuals .

The best answer I've found is they have improved manufacturing techniques and can produce higher volumes of the newer powder vs old methods. I personally think they just rebrand so they can price it higher and sell new load manuals.

Iffin it ain't squeakin...put the oil can back on the shelf!

I don't want or need their new powders with limited manuals and projectiles and I sure as heck don't want any computer generated information about loads, thank you I'll have mine in print and bound for safe keeping.

Just produce more of what already works just fine...come to think of it, it aggravates me to see the changes of our powder containers and labels anyway.

It's tough being old and set in your ways...but most of us will have a chance at it eventually.

My best example is Superformance. I bought a pound not knowing how extremely limited it's use is. Sure- it'll smoke velocity in my 22-250 but that's about it. The old standards suit me fine but I like Varget also. So I'm with OS OK on this one.
