    Lyman 525 Rio hulls tearing

Hi guys. I was testing out some accuray for a Lyman 525 gn slug in a 2-3/4 Rio clear hull with 30 gn WSF and a CB1114-12 wad with roll crimp. I put the crimp on with a BPI roll crimper. Several of the hulls literally tore apart right ar the roll crimp. Is this a sign of a bad crimp job? Rio hull issue? Pressuure too high? What is this trying to tell me that I'm not yet understanding. The group was pretty decent however. 5 shot 7" group at 50 yards with the mandatory flier. If that one had staying inside the group it would have been 4"! The red dot is from a bingo marker and the dot is 3/4" across.

are you hitting the shoulder on the bullet or using a top card?
if using a top card the roll should only be about the thickness of a dime if your going much deeper than that you have a stack height issue to work out. [taller crush section on the wad]

if to the shoulder, the depth can be fixed by a top card.

the lyman data says fold crimp only.

With Rio and Chedite I've found they are generally single use if you are pushing them anywhere near 10,000psi with a roll crimp.

I'm loading the same slug in fiocchi and rio hulls. None of my hulls tore and they can be reloaded again. However, I'm using a slower powder than you. Maybe that's why.

I tired Green Dot, Longshot, WSF, Clays and who knows how many more. Longshot performed well but is "robust" in noise and recoil. I found WSF to be a great choice as I am only shooting paper ringing steel. Unfortunately I used up all my clear RIO primed hulls and the Souther Alberta dealer for BPI doesn't have any in stock at the moment. I'm jonsing to get a whack of them loaded up and start stockpiling too.

I use bluedot with both 5x3 00 and my tri-ball loads, the hulls are single use with either of those, both roll crimped.

I've seen several once-fired Rio hulls with partly shredded fold crimps. Most European hulls are skived to improve fold crimping and some times the skiving has been a little to deep, hence the tearing you noticed.

I had tearing on some hulls while experimenting with extremely deep roll crimps. Even though the original skived star-crimp had been trimmed off, the front edge of the slug would slip over the crimp and rip part of it off. I believe the problem was caused by the ribs on my Brenneke-clone slugs having slightly rounded front edges compared to the sharp profile of the original Brenneke design.

I believe this was part of my issue as well. I had some fairly deep roll crimps on some of those.

I'd be more worried about how well it shot rather then torn hulls . If you're using once fired Rio's and the load shots well at your desired distance I'd not be bothered in the least . Load uhm shoot uhm and pitch uhm

    6pt-sika,

That''s kinda become my answer as well. No more then I shoot, even for fun, it's not a huge thing to lose the hulls. (although I will probably keep them in case someone comes up with a wicked mini recipe I need to try!)
