    Sailboat lead recovery

I have a coworker wanting to give away a 29 foot sailboat. It is a Pearson Triton from the late 60's. It has a lead keel. The boat weights around 8,000 lbs and is currently on wood supports at his house. The boat would have to be removed before any demo / recovery. I am not sure were to start. There is no trailer available for the boat move. Has anyone here recovered lead from a sailboat?

I looked into this recently. One way to accomplish this task and is somewhat reasonable is to hire a 30 yard dumpster brought to the location and use some yankee ingenuity to load bring to a desired location. Salvage what you want than have the refuge company come remove the rest. The one I recently tried to get was over 800 pounds.

Find someone who has a large excavator and a flatbed to move it, most likely he will have a dump truck also. He could give you a price for moving it, extracting the lead, possibly dumping it in your driveway or place of your choosing and hauling the crushed boat to the dump.

It would be easier/cheaper to chop it up there on site and winch the pieces into a 20 ft dumpster, cut the lead into moveable chunks and haul it off

I would cut the lead up with an electric chain saw. Then call the local fire department and see if they will burn it for practice. They will actually burn houses down to practice their skills so I would recon they might do the same for a boat. If not, get a dumpster and cut it up right there and have them haul the dumpster away. I think that would be the cheapest way to deal with it.
Let us know how it works out.

Large hauls like this can be a challenge to deal with. Access to some equipment is very nice. Don't forget when scrapping that sailboat that there may be some other items worth money. Maybe brass and stainless fixtures. Some furnishings are also valuable to decorators.

Take off the lead keel and them park the sailboat in your yard and use it as a playhouse of guest room. A friend of mine scraps sailboats and that is what he does. Gets the abandoned boats for free, sells the lead and brass, then gives away the boat. Most of the boats get dug into the ground to make them more stable. Boats can be real nice inside.

A 29ft boat can have a keel weight upto 3000lbs depending on type. Cut the keel off with a chainsaw and take the hull to scrapyard

It's amazing how many people don't read the op to see what the real questions are! I don't know much about sailboats but would the owner allow you to cut that sailboard off the bottom (if it doesn't lift up). If so you could winch it up onto a long car hauler type trailer and tow (slowly, because it will heavy in the back and will sway)to your location for demo.

you beat me to it. Sitting on wood slats was a dead give away

Drat it has to be moved prior to demolition? I think the price wouldn't be worth it....wait til he gets a little more desperate to get it out his yard. How to eat an elephant....one bite at a time....

You are looking at anywhere from 5,000lbs to 10,000lbs and the only real way to know is to lift it! Unless the cribbing is set so you can remove it as a trailer backs under it, and even then I think you'll need a crane! I don't think an excavator will be able to lift it.
So a crane, another trailer and truck, at least four riggers, a crane operator and two drivers. I'm willing to bet you'd have close to $3k in this endeavor before it's done, that's just moving it.
Then you have to have a place for it to land and get rid of the rest of it after you recover the lead. I can't see it being very viable.

I like Traffers idea of demo-in-place.
Rent the largest dumpster with tall sides.
Last time I had one here for a week and a few days it cost $600.00. With a few hand tools and a good chainsaw, I can't see why you couldn't disassemble that boat in pieces small enough to stack well in the dumpster.

There are prolly a lot of turnbuckles and winches that'll fetch you some extra money...and, what about an engine? That oughta be worth something too. Should be a water tank, a grey water tank and a poop tank...I'd go look at it real close and work out a plan. It's gonna take some effort on your part but think of all that lead!

Rent a boat trailer, move boat, strip boat, take boat to water, tow it out to sea and sink it. return trailer.

Many sailboat keels have been made from junkyard lead of mixed provenance. Before you commit to taking the boat off the owner's hands, it might be a good idea to test for zinc with a few drops of muriatic acid.

Is it cribbed in a way you can get a trailer under it? I know, we assume it was hauled and unloaded this way, but....... Well, a picture says a lot!
Other than that, you've had one of the better ideas!

I would give it some thought about 'responsible recycling' of that boat...you certainly can do what you wish but, sometimes a thing will come back and bite you in the butt when you least expect it.

Having opportunity to reclaim all that lead is one thing...a good thing, just be responsible about it and be honorable or walk away.
