    auction question

i have a rifle that i want to put up for auction on this site. the question that i have , is. if i do not get the bid that i am happy with, am i obligated to sell it? or if i advertise it at a price followed by OBO; and the price offered is too low, am i obligated to sell it ?

Set the starting price at your best offer price. You'll know the market if you get bids or not then

My suggestion is to start the auction at your minimum selling price.

So if you want $400 for the rifle start the auction off at $400.

I am not going to say that you have to sell a item you did a auction with if you don't get the amount that you want but I will say that it will be frown upon if you don't complete the deal.

You can do a WTS: listing and have a price or best offer.
You don't have to take any offers

To clarify you can't have a wts listing that just has best offer. There has to be a price but it can be $xxx or best offer

    My 2˘

Auctions on this website, only make sense to me, if you have something rare that you can't put a rock solid value on (like a Winchester mod 43 in 218Bee). You are allowed to put up guns for auction, but be sure to be very thorough with the details (good photos, all info about gun, starting Bid, shipping info, Auction ending time, ect.), and like HATCH said, it is frowned upon, if you don't follow through.

My suggestion to you, if your item is not rare, and let's say that item sells regularly at the big auction site for $600 to $700, but maybe you have see them at gunshows for $500 on occasion, but you really don't want to sell it for less than $400. What I'd do, is list it as a regular sale ad for $600, if you don't get any offers in a couple days, lower the price by $100. From my experience of selling stuff here, that is about the time that the low ball offers start coming in, usually by PM ...you can choose to accept them or decline them.

    Good Luck,
    Jon

edit: also be sure to know your State's laws about shipping firearms, as well as the recipient's State's laws about his FFL receiving that gun...ie: some guns can't be shipped to California.

If you list a rifle here in an auction style sale you are obligated to sell to the highest bidder. I might suggest having the minimum opening bid be the lowest price you would be happy with. As Jon said, unless the rifle is particularly rare I would not bother with an auction on this site.

Just out of curiosity what sort of rifle is it you want to sell?

    That not true.
Sellers can sell to whomever they want.
Until money/gear/etc trades hands then no transaction has taken place.

What happens if the seller decides that they want to keep whatever they are selling?
That had happened in regular WTS sales.
