Of the choices, 44 mag. Currently though, the Henry Longranger in. 308 is my choice.

If I had only one rifle and meeting my basic needs counted, Browning's BLR in 358 Winchester might get it done. My Winchester 1886 carbine in 45-70 would be a close second - just the rifle size on that one bumps it from the top. The Browning is slightly lighter. Either pack the punch and can be loaded down.

Hunting only here in Ohio with straight wall cartridges for deer means my JM model Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 is the lever rifle I won't part with.

I agree wholeheartedly. Moose to mice and scope capable and very accurate. A straight grip 336 T or CB would be icing on the cake. Nothing kills a deer any more dead than the cartridge that has probably taken the most deer since 1895.
    I still vote 30-30.

I am really liking the 45/70 with the low velocity mouse fart loads. Tons of fun finding an accurate load . Then finding a good load around 1200fps for deer that is easy shooting. I'm really enjoying my 2nd 45/70 Evan in old age. Just me I guess.

    I voted for 30-30

Decent performer on varmits to deer, brass and loaded ammo available wherever, My other choices= 356 Win. accurate, very powerfull for large game, loaded with pistol bullets lead or jacketed still potent for large game or small game and varmits. Easy on lead supply if used when times are tough.

My 3rd choice is 38/357 Not my first choice for deer but ok with short range and heavy bullets. Ok for all other hunting. Lots of brass and loaded ammo around.

4th choice is 45-70 For anything from mice to moose. Guns are necessarily on the heavier side. Brass long lived and easy to reload. Make your own choices and all will be winners....afish4570

My .45 lc JM Marlin 1894. Fewer parts than a Winchester, holds alot more ammo than a 45-70 and while a 44 mag has a little edge over a 45lc, the 45 using hotter hunting loads and heavier 45 bullets there’s not much difference. And scope mounting is a breeze.

I've had my eye on a number of vintage 44-40 rifles. Just have to settle on the right one. Pricing is all around the world. But like all else, the right one will come.
    So 44-40 is my choice.

I would have to pick NONE OF THE ABOVE. Where is the .38-55 and .22lr? The latter is certainly the most popular.

I bought my Winchester Model 94 AE several years ago for it's versatility. I'd stay with it for the above mentioned reasons. Heavy enough to deal with anything I'll run across, and can be loaded to reduced charges and still do it's job.

I only have one centerfire lever action and that is a Marlin 1894 in .44mag, since I have M29 4” too. But if I had been smart I should have got a .357 lever rifle so then I would HAVE TO buy a .357 revolver. Dang it!

The .44 is plenty accurate with minimal drop out to 100 yds but have that it drops quite a bit more and you need to estimate range carefully or just not do it. I love shooting my M29 and the lever gun that shares the ammo is a lot of fun too. Puzzles me why manufactures put such a slow rifling twist on the lever actions that only shoot maybe to 275 gr well, while revolvers have much faster twist that can go well beyond 300 gr.

I could enjoy a lever action in any caliber though it is all good! Grew up with a ‘94 Winchester .30 WCF made in 1916 and it was so slick action from long use. Sweet handling.
