I would be hard-pressed to decide between the .44 Mag/.44 Spl and the .357 Mag/.38 Spl. Both c aliber combinations will take kist about anything i might come across here in Kentucky - no matter how many legs. And a rifle/pistol combination in either is not to be sneezed at.

I have contributed to this several times - but my oldest son decided to leave his beloved 348 this year in exchange for his 7th great grandfather's 1886 in 45-90. He's bound and determined he's going to get his bull with that rifle. He loaded his own rounds and range tested 15 before taking it.
I have killed 2 elk with it when I got it back (been missing from the family since 1925 or so) and it flattered me by asking to take it. It's all about passing that torch. It made my father almost tear up.

For me the .357 would be the most versatile. From deer on down, especially at closer ranges like we have in the mountains here, it would be able to fill every role I would need. For long distances, I would have picked 30-30.

I wonder if I have a older comment in here ? If I knew what I know today about reloading and casting and where I have hunted for the past 50 years I would have bought a 45-70 levergun instead of a 30-06 bolt rifle .
When I think back on all the **** I learned in high school it's a wonder I can think at all ! And then my lack of education hasn't hurt me none I can read the writing on the wall.

Man I have posted to this thread several times now - seems I keep talking out of both sides of my mouth!
25-20 is essential, as is the 32-20. But my 35 WCF's keep producing and it's difficult to discount them! But then there's the 348 WCF and the 45-90.......
And that darn 70-150 project I have is calling my name daily!!

My favorite lever gun is like asking which kid do you love more.

    I've got a ..45-70 Marlin CB, a Marlin .38/.357, a Win. top eject .30-30, and Henry Golden Boy .22.
    Each one is my favorite.

I chose 38/357 mag. Most everyone has a pistol chambered in one of those rounds. Probably easy to load subsonic if needed and plenty of punch for in close work.

Hard to say on just one...as I own at least one in 6 of the 10 listed.
And multiples in 4 of the 6... I tried but there are a couple that are listed are of no interest to me, but that being said I have some in calibers that aren't listed up there.

I traded for two ROSSI R 92's one is a 16 inch barrel, stainless 38/357, and the other is 20 inch barrel, stainless, 45 COLT/454 CASULL. Here in south Alabama, these two will handle just about anything I happen to run across. That 16 inch barrel is a joy to tote, and we all know we carry more than we shoot.
I did change out the sights, to peep sights I got from STEVE'S GUNZ, AND plugs I also got from STEVE'S to replace the funky safety, and changed out the magazine followers, to metal from plastic.
    Both were new guns

I currently own 4 Winchester lever guns.

    1953 vintage M64 32 Special
    1954 vintage M64 30-30
    1984 Centennial M94 30 WCF
Miroku 1886 45-70 (26" Octagon with pistol grip)

I need to add a M64 25-35 and then I will be all set!

Pretty sure when I voted I said 45-70...but these M64s are so handy, I would probably keep one of them. 30-30 has a lot better bullet selection, so....M64 in 30-30 is the winner.

I forgot to mention I have a Ruger Security Six 4 inch barrel 38/357 to go with that Rossi, and an Uberti EL PATRON, 45 COLT, to go with the 45 colt/454 casull, with 5 1/2 inch barrel, and I do reload, and am starting to learn to cast

    I have 3 lever guns, a 1907 Savage 99B, a 1958 Marlin 336 and a Winchester 94 Classic octagon made sometime in the 1980s, all 3 are chambered in the .30-30 Winchester.

This will be my second post on this thread. My oldest granddaughter (29) went to her local range to participate in the weekly running deer match, competing with a rifle I gave her. She earned a 3rd and a 4th these past two weeks.
The rifle is a Winchester Model 88 Carbine lever action, caliber .308 Winchester.

I cast my vote for 30-30. If you're only going to own one lever action it would be downright un-American for it not to be chambered in 30-30. Thankfully, we can own multiple lever guns so go on and get ya one of each.
