    Russia Paradox Slug range results

This is the preliminary testing of these slugs. Next round will be shot at 100 yards, as these where at 50 yards. I'll also increase charges, esp with Blue Dot. Overall, not too bad. Gun used was an H&R USH. Next, I'll run these though a smoothbore at the request of Longbow. See pics for ballistic data.

I did have inconsistent crimps with a few hulls with I believe accounted for fliers.

Sorry, I've lost track. Which slugs are these? Hard to tell from what's left.

The slugs I am curious about are the 12 ga. Lyman sabot slug clones in smoothbore. I've been hearing a variety of reports on 100 yard groups with most being pretty good. However, turbo1889 said the Lyman sabot slug becomes unstable at transonic velocities which are going to occur at around 60 yards or so with normal loads. That should mean poor 100 yard accuracy.

I have not seen any posted targets showing 100 yard groups from anyone saying they shoot well to 100 yards though.

If they are good to 100 yards I'll have to get me a mould. Either Russian or Mihec. I do like Mihec brass moulds and a double cavity slug mould would be nice!

If you get good groups with them I'll believe you!

These slugs weight around 548 grs. My question to you guys is how much would you increase powder charge? I was thinking about going up from 33 grs of BD to 35grs, 30 grs of longshot to 33 grs, and 35 grs of steel to 38 grs.

Thoughts? I still have 4756 and 800x I can use.

You should be fine at 35 grs. Blue Dot. I based by 0.735" RB load off the Precision Rifle PileDriver slug data which they pressure tested. The slug weight 610 grs. and was loaded over 36 grs. BD starting load and 44 grs. max at 12,000 or 12,500 PSI IIRC... high either way in my opinion. The data said to use any new straight walled hull so not very specific there. I used Fiocchi 2 3/4" hulls and a hard card wad column with a plastic over powder gas seal.

The ball weighs about 580 grs. depending on alloy.

I gave up at 38 grs. BD as recoil was "stout" in my single shot. That load worked well.

So, you can put a few more grs. of BD under that slug. I'd start at 35/36 grs. under that slug and work up a bit at a time until recoil stopped me or I was reaching maybe 42 grs. I think their 44 gr. load was a bit hot and certainly left little room for any sort of pressure excursion.

I'd have to look up old data for 4756 but that is what I have been using in more recent times as I am almost out of BD and none to be had here. Greg Sappington recommended 4756 over BD but so far I have to say I prefer BD for the slugs I have tried with both. Both powders worked but I seemed to get better results with BD. It would likely take a bunch of comparative testing to be sure though.

The other powders I have no experience with.

2 3/4 or 3"? Can bump up the Steel several grains in 3" no problem.

These were 2 3/4". I'll use 3" the next time around.

I am watching this thread with interest.
Haven't been on here in years but plan on resurrecting slug casting for paper targets.
Tried Lee/Lyman with mediocre results out of smoothbore 1187.
    The paradox slug looks interesting.
Where I shoot plastic cup type wads are banned so something that uses fibre/card wads is ideal.
I would be interested in some smoothbore results if any one has tried it.

I'm sure Slim Pickens would be proud. Nice looking hammer. I'm still deciding on what I'm going to stuff in my 12ga. brass cases. I keep vasillating between a nice round ball or a custom slug.
