Tips for smoothing out PC...or dose it matter?

I tried some PC on my HP casts today. Maybe I'm just too anal but I'd like to see a smooth coat like I spray painted them. I baked in my oven at 400 degrees and air cooled. I shake and bake and then bounce the boolits in an empty container to get the excess off.

What can I do to get an even coverage with my PC?

Is my oven not hot enough or is this the norm? Coverage is great but a little clumpy like I have build up.

Will this affect my 100 yard accuracy compared to a completey smooth coat?

When you pick up the boolits with forceps from the shake and bake, give them a couple taps on container to shake off the excess powder. Sometimes I even give them a quick breath of air.

Some colors seem to be smoother than others. Smoke's clear is super smooth.

After you size, the sides of the boolits will look like polished glass.

The coating wont hurt anything as to accuracy.

You could get s spray set-up for really smoooooth coatings!

20 min at 415 degrees. They are still a little lumpy but better.

I have another four in at 425, we will see what happens.

I know When I size them the sizes will be smooth but I was wondering how the variation around the nose would affect consistency.

All powders will act a little differently. I use smokes powders exclusively now due to the smoothness and even "flow out" I get. Some of his even prefer a different temp, and cooking time.

Me too, this is his purple. I'm sure it's because I'm Shake and baking and not spraying. I am getting complete coverage with this method. I might have to go to harbor freight and pick up a sprayer.

The little bumps will NOT affect accuracy ..
I have many many rds downrange with bullets I coated (sprayed) standing nose down on hex nuts. Bullets were at all kinds of angle .it did not affect 100 yd accuracy at all ..
have to understand you are adding almost NO weigh with the coating

shoot a few prove it to yourself .. you will be pleasantly surprised

Sweet, if it doesn't affect accuracy then I'm not going to worry about it,thanks....now that I've tried the experiment I'm going to keep going till they slump or to see if the PC gets hot enough to melt smooth.

ID:	200333 this my 435 degree. The HP isn't melting I'm just using my rejects for the test. 445 is baking.

I tested my Lee 310's with your blue smoke and got a 100 yard, 1.25" group with my 450 bushmaster and the paint wasn't much smoother.

445 degrees in the kenmore gas stove for 20 minutes looks like we are getting somewhere! Thanks SMOKE!... for the tip of bumping up the degrees little by little. I put a couple more in again a little higher to see what happens. It's pretty cool to experiment...especially when it works out in the end...

How are you determining temperature? If not with a good thermometer you might just be getting up the desired 400⁰F.

I believe you but I guess I needed to try my oven out till my paint smoothed out. Saved buying a thermometer...

I'm guessing it's as smooth as I'm going to get till my boolits slump.
Once again these were rejects and that's the way the HP looked before PCing.

They look a lot better than my starting temp. I'll have to invest in a an oven thermometer one of these days.

If you want smooth use clear gloss.

I think the Coroner will be more impressed by seeing a round that opened up like a dinner plate than he will the color!

Any way you look at it they're 'purple people eaters'...

Methinks it would take testing in a Ransom rest to determine any differences in 'accuracy': a human shooting from field positions?? Not very likely!

490-f is plenty hot enough to start melting the bullets. [it's 40-f above the melt point of tin]
    use a real thermometer.

At 490 pics you got some melting on the HP or was that PC not even or not full fill out ? But I would get a true temp reading and keep the heat around 400 just increase the time spent in the oven is my thinking.

No melting, these were my rejects I tested in that didn't fill out.

Spraying will always give a better finish than shake & bake, but the powder has a lot to do with it. Try using less powder. I use 1sp, does about 300 9mm.
