    Help with mixing 16:1

I am having trouble finding the recipe. If I remember is 6% tin(I'm using pewter) and 94% pure lead? So 10lbs of pure and 9 oz of tin?

I am debating on using this in my 44 mag devistator mold. It's either this, 50% pure lead,50% COWW, and 2% tin.

Or just 98% COWW and 2% tin.

I have about 15lbs of pewter I purchased over the last two weeks to start my casting.

Use the 16-1 alloy in the Devastator.....you will be a happy camper......

Larry, did I get the mix right?

I thought I saw a post that 16:1 penatrated further than AC COWW and 50/50 with 2% tin somewhere. How can a softer lead penatrate better?

Dividing the larger number by the smaller number should give 16. Your example gives 15.666666667 so I guess you're close nuff.

16 pounds of lead and 1 pound of tin or pewter gives you 17 pounds of alloy.

    Help with mixing 16:1
Three parts Lyman #2 and seven parts pure lead.
It contains 97% lead, 1.5% tin and 1.5% antimony.
After 18 hours, it hardness tests at 9.8 Bhn, and remains at that level for (at least) a year.
    Regards

Thanks, 16 lbs pure lead and one pound pewter will be how I ad to my pot.

Glad I held onto the 100's of lbs of pure lead flooring.

16 ounces of lead to 1 ounce of tin/pewter.

    16 ounces = 1 pound

For example: 5 lbs lead + 5 ounces tin
    7 lbs lead + 7 ounces tin

Is this a new mix for 16:1? Or are you trying to give me a similar BH mix? I don't believe what you listed will be mallable as the 16:1 pure soft lead and tin mix.

Mix 16 parts lead 1 part tin
just figure out the weight of your lead and divide that amount by 16
    to get your tin amount
    1# lead 1 oz tin
    Hit em'hard
    hit em'often

Triplebeards - are you familiar with Dan Theodore? Without a doubt the most knowledgeable about ballistics including the design of the "Money Bullets" - now sold by several BPCR vendors
Dan developed the bullet and in 1:16 Bhn- tested and after the initial match trials with Keith Lay - Keith used it to obtain top gun at the Raton, NM Silhouette match several years back.
Other than being accurate, a major advantage of this mix is - " It is hard enough to hold the rifling in fast twist barrels, and prevents nose slump in paper patched bullets "
I would have to dig in my copies of the BP Cartridge News - Dan wrote a detailed article with bullet samples that showed how well his 1:16 alloy performed
So yes, it is a new mix for 1:16 ( 97% lead, 1.5% tin and 1.5% antimony). It's your choice whether to try it or disregard
    Regards
    John

I made my mix of 16lbs of pure lead flooring and a pound of pewter. I melted the flooring first then added the pewter.i waited till the floating pewter melted and then I stirred nonstop for about a minute to make sure it mixed, skimmed the top, and poured into my cast iron pie slice mold. I casted four test bullets with some of the extra to check the BH with my Lee tester. I also casted a few of the pure flooring to test BH. I AC the boolits.

I would assume there is no wait time to test the BH on the pure lead and 16:1?

I hate to mention this, but I didn't see where you fluxed the mix to ensure proper and complete alloying and removal of possible contaminants.
