I liked it, But he had me refinish it to a High gloss Poly Finish , and Glass Bed it
It didnt take much fitting to get it to fit his action, but it is not a Drop in perfect fit.
But to me, very few stocks are
Lags do you recall what the barrel channel contour was on that stock?

I do not recall what barrels contour the stock was cut to.
But I paid no attention to it because I figured the barrel would be a heavier barrel.
I would have to inlet it anyway and I glass bed the barrel channel with a built in .010" clearance anyway

Just trying to figure out before I purchase it. No one there or on their forum has been able to give me any kind of answer. Just don’t want a huge gap or a bunch of epoxy fill....

    That is a reasonable move.
Like I said, I knew that I was putting in a Larger and Heavier barrel.
But most stocks that I have bought for Mausers have been a # 2 or #3 Contour

.35 Whelen is an excellent choice for hunting. I would use it up to and including Grizzly or Brown Bear. Really, an ideal North American cartridge. You can load it down, or load it up, use cast or jacketed. They are generally very accurate. Honestly, if I had only one cartridge to carry, this would be in the top 5 for choices for sure.
I am building two as we speak. They are taking a while, but have started out well. FN actions, hinging the floorplates at this point. One has a lighter barrel, one has a heavier barrel. I have thought about reaming out the heavier barrel for .358 Norma...but I will probably wait until I see how I like it in .35 Whelen.
I think the .35 Whelen is one of the most underrated and unappreciated cartridges out there. It is simply amazing.

Well finally got some dimensions on the barrel channel. Stock is here and have done most of the work to open it up. I still have not had the time to do the bedding on it as of yet. Click image for larger version.

I have not been able to catch up with my friend that was going to drill the sight holes for me and most every "gunsmith" in the area is backlogged due to hunting season starting in November. As it sits right now it is 8.2 lbs with the sights and those screws sitting beiside it on the scale with empty magazine.

    Alright I ran into some
Issues taking this rifle to the range yesterday.

Hornady 200 gr factory ammo rates at 2910 for was run 3040,3039,3081 fps. Primers flattened.
49 grs of reloader 15 with Speer 250 hot cor, WLR primer was 2360 primers pushed and flat.
When inspecting cases after getting back home and taking measurements I noticed a ring around the casemouth on all fired cartridges reformed from to 270 and the hornady factory 35 whelen. This ring mic'd at .3870 the neck below this ring is .3885-3890. I can feel said ring with thumb. Is this a tight spot from reaming the chamber?this is the First time rifle has been fired.
What might have caused this ring while reaming the chamber?
Sorry working off my phone and can't get the pictures below instead of above.

Looks like the chamber was cut with an 06 reamer and then throated with a 35 neck reamer. Other possibility is very long brass.

I cut the chamber myself, bolt closed 2/3 on no go but would not close completely.
Chamber was cut with elk ridge reamer rentals 35 whelen mfd by PT&G.
Brass length 2.4925 hornady and reformed 270 is 2.4795

Ive found with a good tight chamber pressures and velocity will be above what reloading manuals say it should be.
Also I would do a pound cast of the chamber and see exactly what it looked like as what the max length could be.

Mine was made on a Long 721 action, and put in a 700 BDL 8mm Rem Mag stock,
    Douglas XX barrel was used
Used a 700 trigger and modified the action to fit the 700 safety
    Nice shooting gun

    My 2 cents worth...

Considering your brass looks like this at the very mouth I would want to know what is going on just in front of the case mouth too. A chamber cast or pound cast would be a good idea so you know everything about what was cut - bolt face to rifling.
Looks like a rifle I would enjoy having and hunting with. The 35 Whelen is a super star to me.

From looking at the pictures I just figured it was what was left of the factory applied crimps, especially since the 270 brass he formed had this "ring" around the case mouth even though the formed brass was shorter. You will find this "ring" on all factory brass, takes a whole lot of firing and trimming to completely remove them. .02

Hey swheeler I appreciate your help in finding the fix to the issue with the brass in the thread above. Been a while since this thread was made.

Ha! I did not see the 2017 date either. The other linked thread is interesting.

I hope you have made meat with your Whelen by now! That is one fine rifle you have there and should be handed down someday.
