Further reading indicates as they were both Levites, both were prophets (Major presenters and deciples) of the Law to the Jews and both were on 'the' mountain 40 days.
    Whatever!

What I could glean is the literal interpretation. They each represent a period in Jewish history, the Law and the Prophets. When done speaking to Jesus the disciples observed them departing. Their time and rules were over and done. Now its the New Covenant under Jesus. Then God the Father instructed then to listen (follow) Jesus and sanctioned His ministry.

God made sure that the key apostles understood they are under Christ now and He it behind it.

    Just my 2 cents.

Think you can, or think you can't. Either way your right.

Elijah was first, Elisha was second. Depending on your theology, ALL the SAINTS are with God at physical death. Gets a little tricky on an intermediate 'holding' place or not. I agree that Moses represented the Law (to show us how bad we really are) and the Major Prophet Elijah (representing the all knowing and powerful God). Jesus did say that after Him, no more prophets. Enter the time of the Holy Spirit.
    Whatever!
