    338 and twist rate.

Hi guys I am thinking of having a 338 caliber rifle built.

The longest bullet I want to shoot from it will be 1.3" 278 grain.

I obviously want something that will stabilize that, preferably at around 1000fps, but also want to be able to shoot shorter bullets fast.

Standard twist for the 338 is pretty much universally 1:10 because some jacketed bullets are as much as 1.8" long.

I plan on only shooting cast!

A 1:10 will limit my uper velocity to 1600fps (before accuracy heads south).

1:10 twist is available to be easily, 1:12 easily but at cost a 1:14 only if I go to the hassle of importing from overseas.

What sf should I be aimming for as a minimum? 1:12 at 1000 gives a SF 2.1 1:14 at the same SF 1.6.

What twist should I go for, by that I mean which would be the most versatile for cast assuming that no bullets longer than 1.3" will ever be used?

I have a 338-06. Rebore done by Jes reboring. It is 1-12. Shoots 180-225 jacketed sub moa. And 280 grain cast at 1200-1900 fps. Just great

"The longest bullet I want to shoot from it will be 1.3" 278 grain."

A 14" twist will stabilize that bullet down to 900 fps.

I would probably opt for the 1-12 so you can run the whole gamut of cast and jacketed as the need arises.

I shoot a 1-9 twist in the .338 Lapua. I like it for the very long 300 gr. Berger bullet. My next .338 will be a .338 Federal with a 1-12 twist.
