My pics often get posted upside down too, I don't know why.

"True, I meant the P7M8 followed in the American market. In fact, I think the P7M8 was specifically made for trials by the New Jersey State Police but I'm not certain that's true. The NJSP did adopt the P7M8 and later, the P7M13."
True, along with many local NJ PD's . Park police used them as well as some DOE sites

The HK P7. . .only German engineers would be so redundant as to put a gas chamber in a pistol.
To me, the double stack magazine concept is kind of like the DA/SA trigger system - both were gizmos that tried to solve general incompetence of the operators in a way that made it harder for a more competent operator to accomplish the primary mission of a pistol - to hit what he was shooting at with it. Nine rounds in a gun that fits the hand and can be shot accurately is a better problem-solver than 15 in a gun that doesn't and can't. In the case of West German police, I would doubt that MP-5's were that far out of reach for when things got truly hairy.
The answer screaming in everyone's face has pretty much always been "Bring a long gun", which brings up an interesting consideration: That the high-cap wondernines somehow got so popular in the U.S. where every cop cruises around in a car that can hold any rifle or shotgun desired.
WWJMBD?
In the Land of Oz, we cast with wheel weight and 2% Tin, Man.
I owned a good post war alloy frame P-38 and later a PP in 32 ACP. Both were good German police surplus and were good pistols. For one reason or another I didn't hang on to either.
