Didn't think of loading a reduced load. Don't have any round ball. Got some REAL 320 some SSTs and Great Plains. Was thinking of a reduced shot gun type load. Trying to limit collateral damage. Also didn't think of trapping or pellet gun. You guys gave me more ideas. Trying to keep me out of trouble ,eh. Thanks

Spice cookies (the ones shaped like windmills) made for an instant buddy.
But that coon was about the size of my hand, injured, abandoned... yeah, ok guys, I nursed it back to health. Weeks later it was healed up and would come scamperin' down the big oak tree out back when I went out and called it. Finally had to haul it twenty miles off in a catch-em-live because the neighbors would kill it the first time it went next door to sit up, say hi and give me a cookie.

Dog proof traps baited with Fruit Loops cereal is my son's favorite coon trap. Works the best don't have to worry about neighbor's cats or dogs. Dispatch with a standard 22lr using a silencer or use CCI 22CB's in a rifle.

He uses them for both animal control and for fur in the regular trapping season. For the bait mini-marshmellows are almost as good or mix the two.

Geezer, the Fruit loops and marshmallows sounds like good bait, but must be kept in tightly sealed bucket in back of the truck. If in the front seat beside me I'd eat it all up myself !

Fly bait + Coca Cola = dead coon.

Place in an area where no other animals or pets can access.

The dog proof traps will catch a cat. I have caught one. I will not use them anymore. Only live traps.

This thread's title could SO go sideways with a quickness.

You ain't kiddin'! Trouble is, ANY living thing that gets some OR eats the 'coon won't survive, either.
It'd be my luck I'd go to the Federal Pen for killin' an eagle. No, thanks!

    Let's see.
Raccoons usually preform their mischievous deeds at night. Eagles conduct their activities during daylight hours.

Anyone who uses this method for controlling the activities of mischievous raccoons need to be prudent in disposing of any said raccoons that become food for eagles during the nighttime hours. Raccoons seldom travel more then 8-10 feet from the bait.

You can apply the last two S's in S.S.S. here.
No need for anyone to get their tail in a knot over this.

If it works for you, that's certainly your business. Not everyone is as prompt as yourself in 'cleaning up'. I'm certainly not immune to getting distracted by an unexpected occurrence.

That's all I meant to say.

Midway has some leg-hold traps that are as humane as a trap can be. They're like a 5" or so pipe that sticks down in the ground, and you put the bait (peanut butter, etc.) down in the tube, cock it and bury it, and set the chain that holds it. A friend has found them to be very effective. I haven't used mine yet, and gave them to my grandboys. They're too wrapped up and involved with school, ball and church, to have enough time to "play" with them. But at least they're there if they feel "froggy" one day. This is what I'd use, personally, were I to have coon problems. And they CAN be a BIG problem! Love them, but sometimes, even things we love have to be dealt with.

You mean a DOG PROOF TRAP that is what they are a tube. You do not need to bury them by the way. If you catch a cat in one it is your fault on the bait! Few hundred set and coons caught but not 1 Freaking cat or dog.

Cats where we are are also considered pests want to keep a kitty keep it INSIDE. outside they breed and kill many game birds. Thank fully fishers and coyotes control their numbers. Sorry to the cat lovers but the way it really is in the world.

What bait would attract a coon, but not a cat? I would like to use the dog proof traps as the coons become trap smart to the live traps quickly.
The cats do not go after game birds down here. The fire ants kill them as soon as they hatch. This area used to be full of quail, but they are all gone. The cats do kill the rats and mice that attack my crops. Ferrel cats do not live long, the coyotes kill them. We did not have any coyotes down here till about 25 years ago.

I use cheap pancake syrup in my dog proof traps. The suggestion of Froot Loops and P-nut butter, grape jelly, shouldn't attract cats too much either.

Meat, fish and scents catch cats. Fruit Loops or marshmallows don't. 50+ years of trapping experience and many courses by F&G tell me that.

I bet I could catch a cat in a dog proof if I really tried but domestics cats are so easy why try!

ANY cats bothering our chickens will die even if they are our own.

I use home made dogproof traps, just 4 or five sharpened 2" screws set into a 1" pvc pipe and bait with marshmellows, fruit loops or some other food that coons like, the coons won't let go what they have in their fist and use a long stainless leader so he cain't get a hard pull on the stake.works fair but cheap fun to experiment with.
