Final M48A range report before perry

In my last thread I said I'd try it at 200 yards. I had the loads down to a few top contenders.

    175 gr RN
    175 gr FN
both WQWWs with gas checks and 50/50 lube.

I shot 10 rounds with each bullet with each of the following loads:
    27 gr IMR 4895 w/ dacron
    29 gr IMR 4895 w/ dacron
17 gr SR 4759 (surplus) no filler

In other words, 6 load combinations.

Any of them would do justice in a vintage match, shooting consistently in the 9 and 10 ring. At 200 yards with crummy Mauser sights, all in the black is about as good as I personally am going to ask for and all loads delivered this result.

However, the sad truth of it is the little popgun load with the 4759 was noticeably the tightest, shooting a 95 3X (remember 10 shot strings) using the FNGC bullet sized at 325 and just about touching the lands. Wolf primers, R-P brass.

So, camp perry, here I come....

Will also be shooting jacketed in the garand, carbine, and springfield matches.

    Results from Perry

I missed a bronze by 4 points due to a miss. The gun grouped really well but no windage adjustable sights plus a crosswind and low velocity bullets= group in the 9 ring. Ah well. I did get a medal in both the Garand and Springfield matches.

Congratulations! Medaling in a Leg Match is a worthy accomplishment, especially @ Perry.

One of the most endearing sights in the world is the vision of a naked good-looking woman leaving the bedroom to make breakfast. Bolivar Shagnasty (I believe that Lazarus Long also said it, but I can't find any record of it.)

    Ed,

The Vintage Matches are not "leg" matches. The NTI is the "leg" match that is associated with the Nationals. The top 10% get medals/points toward Distinguished in a leg match; the top 40% get medals in the Vintage Matches. Big difference.

How old is a "vintage" rifle? I'll assume a 1903 Springfield does not make the cut.
I tried looking it up but got cross eyed.

The Springfield is in its own class. Vintage is defined as as issued foreign military bolt action rifles; anything from the Vetterli through the Madsen.

    What's a "Vintage Rifle"? (Part 1)

See the rules here for definition of "As-issued" rifles:

    http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions/Rulebook.pdf

(N.B. Part Deux cancelled due to difficulties posting long documents: just read the rules from the CMP site.)

    So I would need a 6.3.6 rifle.
    Thanks Bob.

or fully automatic rifl es are not permitted.
    (1) These fi rearms must be as issued by the foreign government, with a standard
stock and leather or web sling.
    (2) Trigger pulls may not be less than 3.5 pounds.
    (3) Rifl es must conform to the weight and dimension specifi cations of the
standard issue service rifl e. Weights may not be added to the rifl e.
    (4) Only Government Issue parts or commercial parts of the exact same
weight and dimensions may be used.
    (5) Sights must be of the same types that were on rifl es issued to regular
military personnel. Special purpose sights designed for sniping or target

are permitted. No other modifi cations or alterations of the “as-issued”
rifl e such as the use of glass or epoxy bedding in any location are permitted.
The use of synthetic or laminated stocks is not permitted unless such
    stocks are original Government Issue.
    (9) All as-issued rifl es must be chambered for the cartridge for which they
    were originally chambered.

6.3.7 Other As-Issued Military and Production Sporter Rifl es
Match sponsors may, at their option, allow competitors to fi re non-standard
rifl es in As-Issued Military Rifl e Matches such as commercial M1 Garands,
commercial M1 Carbines, other semi-automatic service rifl es or sporter-type
rifl es with non-optical sights. If any of these rifl es are used in a sanctioned M1
Garand, Springfi eld, Vintage Military Rifl e, M1 Carbine or As-Issued Military
Rifl e Match, competitors using these rifl es must be recorded as fi ring Out-ofcompetition
    in accordance with Rule 4.11.
