What do you load with Blue Dot?

I picked up a jug of Blue Dot for less than $5.00 a lb.

Now I have to figure out what to do with it.

Where do you use Blue Dot other than Magnum shotgun loads and Magnum pistol loads?

Perhaps you could share "Why" to NOT use it in a 41 Mag from your perspective?

There are loads listed for it. You have my curiosity going.

    Just one example of them:

Powder Cartridge Bullet wt./Grains Max Load Vel. OAL Press. Load Source
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    AL Blue Dot 41 Remington Magnum 200 200 HP 14 1470 1.58 36000 Alliant

OP, hopefully you have reloading manuals; examine all the listings for cartridges you load and see if Blue Dot is listed.

Or go to the Alliant online info site and see what pops up over there.

I don't usually load it in 38 spl, 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, simply because the charge weights are high compared to BE and Red Dot. It works great for 10 mm and 357 sig. I also use it for 45 LC Cowboy loads in a Henry lever gun.

358156 with no GC and 6.8 of BD makes a nice. 38 Spcl load.

I got a few lb's cheap as well, i've been using it up in 45acp. Not an economical load per charge weight, but the fireball is fun.

Used to load a lot of stuff with it... then started getting pressure variations, eventually I moved on to other powders.

However in the last couple years I noticed on their web site that they do NOT recommend Blue Dot in the 41 Mag.

    Thanks!

Good info to share for sure. I am wondering about the linked source I provided, & why they did not either put a warning or something on that page of loads or remove it entirely.
    They should...

I see that Alliant recommends not using it in 357 Mag also with a 125 bullet grain weight also.

I hope others find out about such things before it is too late. My BDot has been reserved for shotgun use mostly, not for pistols. I will remember for sure about this though...

Thanks again for sharing that useful safety info & answering back to sate my curiosity.

12 gauge slug loads, heavy 12 gauge loads, 357 Sig, .357 Magnum. 9mm for a while. That's all I can recall right now!

I've got stacks of loading manuals, not all cast bullet loadings have made it into the load manuals, I don't remember seeing 16 grs. of 2400 for most military rifle cast loads but have seen it here in a number of places and have used it myself extensively in a variety of cartridges with great success, 30-06, 8mm, 318 Westley Richards, 8x50R, 8x56R, 7.62x54R and a few others. That's what I was hoping for.

.223 Rem w/ 40gr Vmax. 3000 fps, just under maximum pressure & unbelievable accuracy. Google poster 'Seafire' if interested.

Funny, just a couple days ago I was looking at trying a more economical powder for .357 mag full loads, as compared to the H110 that I'm using. Blue dot looked like a good candidate to try.

When I saw that Blue Dot was almost $10/pound more than the H110 sitting on the shelf next to it, I decided to keep looking.

I use it alot for 9mm carbine loads with 90 & 115 gr. I dont like it in pistols due to the fire ball.

Some say the newer B-Dot behaves differently than the older powder, so use caution. I have only tried it in the 45-70 and 8x57, my German 88 just loves 13.5gr. and the LEE 175gr bullet.
