what happened to the weatherby vanguard

Used to be a good entry level inexpensive rifle. I was in the gun shop last week and they had a new one that was blued with a camo stock and the price tag on it was 800 bucks! Now this is a shop I use all the time and there not as shop that price gouges.

Wow! I would pay that for a Mark V but not a Vanguard.

They used to be made by Howa, I wonder if there has been a mfg change.

About seven or so years ago a buddy got a brand new in the box black syn/blued 22-250 for $375 at my LGS. He sold it without telling me but I bet it's still a shooter. We sighted it in with Arkansas green&yellow box factory loads and only one group squeaked over an inch(his of course....)
If they are $800 now it's time to buy the one marked Howa instead!
    Best, Thomas.

I'd call it gouging. Look on line they still have moderate prices.

this is the one they had https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/...WBY+MAG+24+3RD so at $630 from buds they were a bit proud of it.

The local Wallyworld has blued/black syn for $485. Remington 700 SP adl $50 less. They have a birch stocked Axis that actually looked ok for $375.

No, it's a Howa 1500 rifle with a few styling changes to make it a Weatherby. Very nice, accurate rifles! Weatherby is ambitious with their MSRPs.

I got a kick out of the member who stated he would only buy a Weatherby mark-V for 800 bucks. He has to be dreaming if he thinks he can find a new one for that price.

I bought one last fall for $519.00 otd. Delivered. Couldn't be happier. Compare it to the 'budget' rifles from the other popular mfr's and it comes out on top since, (IMHO), there is no need to replace the stock or trigger as many seem to do with the others. Seems to like .309 cast just fine. I'm still in the load development phase with it, but it has done well with every thing I have fed it so far. I think if some one is in the market for a 'budget' blue collar, knock around, meat gittin bolt gun, spend a few bucks more over the others and get one. I'm glad I did.

Oh no I was talking about used Mark V's. I have seen them for that price but they had "hunting character".

bought my mark v 240wby last year about this time used but like new with an older friction adjust vari x2 3x9 for 900 bucks. Sold the scope for a 150 so I had 750 into it with leupold rings and bases. To be totally honest though its the mark v standard that doesn't have the skip checkering or forearm tip but in my opinion its a much less gaudy and better looking rifle because of that.
