Mold selection for powder coated 30-30 deer hunting bullet.

Is there any reason why this wouldn't be a good choice for making powder coated bullets for use in a Marlin 30AW?

Someone told me this bullet has too many lube grooves for use with powder coating, and it would cause problems. I'm not sure I believe that. I could use some guidance, here. Thanks.

Will not cause any issues if you get coated correctly. Did you intend to pick a plain base ?
If so will need to keep velocity at about 1900 fps or less

Right now I'm still in the research phase, and have actually discovered something that's perhaps even better, if I'm not too late to get in on the group purchase:

1900 fps would be just fine for me. I just want a good close range blaster. I'm not trying to launch sledgehammers.

If you miss the group buy, grab the 165 ranchdog from NOE. And the too many grooves thing is incorrect, I pc boolits with tl grooves.

That should be a great mold for you

I prefer the Ranch Dog molds generally, but I agree, that bullet will hunt.

I use a 31-184C and a plain base version 31-174 that work fine in my marlin 336. Tried several RD versions but each had a problem. Crimp groove, meplat, etc. Haven't had a problem with full loads and no crimp groove, no setback. Actually they both fit the 30/30 (almost no freebore) and 300BO ( with long freebore) fine. That is Marlin 30/30 biggest problem. Jam the lands with the RD and it pulls the boolit from the case or you need a ramrod to unload. Try to load short and it is REALLY short - poorer accuracy. Load long with the big meplat and they jam when cycling. It's difficult to PC without changing the ogive diam.
    Whatever!

"That is Marlin 30/30 biggest problem."

He has designs for "old" Marlins and new, guns/Marlins. The "old" one is the 170 grain. Regardless, it may not be the best choice, as you note. I think the O/P would be well served by his choice.

Ultimately, I did get into the group purchase for the NOE mold I linked to in post #3, and will be going in that direction.

Even if that mold doesn't work out perfectly for me for use in my Marlin 30, I load a bunch of other 30 caliber rifles that should also do well with that bullet.

Thanks for the advice, folks. Appreciated. That's why I come here.

The group buy bullet design looks alot like the Lyman 3110041 profile, less lube grooves.

Should be a good bullet. Like Smoke4320 mentioned, buy the RanchDog 311-165. Excellent bullet in almost everything .30 caliber.

    Good evening,
I had a LEE 170 FP mold that I had the GC cut out to make a Plain Base boolit. Worked really good at +/- 1600fps. Last winter I was debating what I would like to PC for rifle and I remembered that 170 LEE mold. Cast up a variety with different alloy. So far the best are 70WW/30Pure WQ. I tumble them in screw top containers in my vibrating tumbler. Then sized to 311. I have run them as high as 2100fps, but way tighter groups at +/- 1850fps.
Hope this helps once you get started.
    Have a fantastic Holiday week

Lyman 31141 worked well in my 30-30 with alox lube.

I like to make the most of what I have. I cast the Lee .312 160gr 2R TL. I have switched to powder coating and the TL bullet still works great. I use this boolit in several 30 caliber rifles and size it accordingly. (30-30 to 7.62x54R) Sub sonic without gas check, super sonic with.

Using a old drill bushing and an old reloading die body I made a trim die that allows me to flat tip the Lee boolit accurately. When finished my boolit with .2" flat tip, powder coated and gas checked weighs in at 167gr. (lead/linotype alloy)

It's very accurate from 30-30 as well as my 7.5x54 MAS at velocities very near 2000f/s.

The flat point makes it safe for tube magazines and also makes a very noticeable difference on impact of water filled jugs compared to the same boolit with in-altered pointed tip.

Sorry no photo of one flat tipped.
