    andrew375 is right.
Closest to 5744 is D060. I have both. Mine 5744 (that I bought 10y ago) was made by Lovex. I also read somewhere (Handloader?) that 5744, in its history, was made by 3 different manufacturers. Lovex (Czech) powders here in Europe are the cheapest and are available, meanwhile I can't buy 5744 anymore - and its price (if available ) would be to high.

I shoot mostly SML. 5744 is available and works very well with recommended Savage ML2 loads. My favorite is the 4759 but I'm hoarding my last 2#. I have found VV - N110, RL7 and H4198 are great replacements. I have come to favor the RL7 as it is also a double base powder and is extremely reliable for my purposes. I do not use 4227 or Little Gun in SML due to the fine grain structure and problems with it migrating through breech plug vent liners. My opinion, others will differ. 10

I have replaced a couple of my 5744 rifle loads with RE-7 with success. Among them are a load for my 338 WM and 30/30.

I just checked the Shooters World Propellants web site.
Seems they changed the name of "Cowboy" to "Buffalo Rifle".
At least I think they did.

abuaitoo; That might be. I haven't checked since they first started selling Lovex here as shooters world. I'll look on a couple of sites. Gp

I was just at Shooters World web site. Cowboy is D060 and Accurate 5744 replacement. At $19.99 a pound I'd say that would be the way to go. Right now it's not listed at Midway, Mid-South or Powder Valley so I guess the thing would be just finding some. Gp

I found some Reloader 7 in my stash.
Will try some this weekend, if I get a chance to load some.

Looking over the data for Reloader 7, it sure calls for a lots of powder.
I shoot cast to try and save on powder.
    I'll try it anyway.

I wonder why 5744 is so much more expensive than the rest of Accurate's powders. Looks like they are gouging us for extra $'s. Is "cowboy and D060 as bulky as 5744?
IT AINT what ya shoot--its how ya shoot it. NONE of us are as smart as ALL of us!

    abunaitoo,
5744 is the best powder for cast boolits, it was changed a few times with a increase from 10% nitroglycerin and 84% nitrocellulose to 20% nitroglycerin and 78 percent nitrocellulose when it went from MP5744 to the new XMP 5744. The new 5744 still retains the same percentages. If you can find 5744 in bulk that would be the way to go, if not Reloader 7 is most likely your next best choice. Wolfe Publishing Company publishes a very good book called "Propellant Profiles" it is only about powders and a real wealth of information one should have as part of the reloading data on hand. I like 5744 when I am loading ought six rounds with a 210 gr. Lyman cast. I can go from low velocity around high 1800fps to over 2300. You did not mention just what grain 308 boolit you are shooting, hopefully it is one that has a gas check, or you may end up embedding powder grains in the base of you cast boolits. Here is a shot of my loadings of my ought six with 30 grains of 5744.

I have that book. It's an old one from, I think, the 90's. Don't remember when I bough it.
    Shooting a 160gr. I have a few different 190/200gr molds.
Trying to use as little powder as possible.
Was hoping to use pistol/shotgun powder, but it's not doing what I want.
I'll try Reloader 7, IMR4198, and what ever else I have in the burn range.
    We'll see how it goes.

I think you should have stated this in post #1. What bullet (mold) are you loading? What powder did you try? What is your objective with this load?
