You did well, Grasshopper! Swiss, or Connecticut militia? If the latter, 43 Spanish or 45-70? Henry rifling?

Nope, nope, nope, and nope! 43 Spanish and 45-70 will not chamber, too long. No markings at all to indicate Romanian, Swiss or Conn. militia. And it is centerfire, as it was sold to me as being. The 45-50 cartridges, made from 50-70 brass chamber perfectly and I test fired a primer-only case. I need to load up a few cartridges and see how it shoots.

It IS a Romanian Model, based on the rear sight length and tab-type self-camming CF firing pin. The Romanian Peabody cartridge is considerably longer than the .45-50 Peabody Sporting, the head and rim dimensions are the same as a .50-90 Sharps. (The .45-50 is based on .43 Spanish head and rim). I did a good bit of work with the Romanian Peabody and documented it in these threads previously. Here http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...s-11-43X49mmR) and here http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...-SHOOTING-TEST It's a great cartridge, rather modern looking compared to other military cartridges that were contemporary. The Peabody is the ONLY rifle that was ever chambered for this round. After their drubbing against the Turks, the Romanians decided they needed a more powerful rifle, and adopted the Martini design, made for them by Steyr, and chambered for the .500-450 No. 2 Musket, which they designated 11.43X60m

    .

New Peabody custom rifles, if not still being made, were made fairly recently

I've a carbine in the 56-50 rimfire and while the barrel looks nice the muzzle needs to be cut back. Looks like it was used to drive nails. The owner of the Peabody company used to do center fire conversions at one time. Cost about $500 to do the job. He retired for health reasons and moved out west I believe. So now the company only does the model 21 climbing lyman rear sight and don't know if they still make their rifles. Frank

I have this same rifle in 43 Spanish. Would like to hear how you progress. I got a bunch of brass from Buff Arms, I think. The original stuff went bang, most of the time, but the cases may or may not survive the experience. I have some old CCC brass that would not chamber with Lyman 439186 IIRC.

    Good afternoon
Our first Peabody is a Connecticut 45-70 bought about 10 years back.
5 years back came across a carbine in 56-50 rimfire very reasonable as it could be viewed as a wall hanger.
But being the owner of a center fire beech block one hour later we had a shooting 56-50 centerfire to go along the way with our Spencer.
The two breech blocks readily interchanged between the two receivers even with at least 20 + years between manufacture.
