NOE 460-186-CB. Need help with 45-70 loads

    I have a Noe 186gr bullet mold for my 45/70 Uberti 1885.

I have done some research and have a few questions.

I have soft and hard lead. I only have White Label "Carnauba Red" lube. I have Unique and TrailBoss powder.

Im concerned about shooting these at a low velocity and the hard lube not slinging off uniformly. should I cast some hard bullets and push them 1400+/- or softer bullets at around 1000fps.

Just want to find some sucess sooner rather than later.

I plan to try some BP later but I need to buy another sizer so I can have reg lube in oneand BP lube in the other.

"soft lead and hard lead" doesn't tell us anything. Can you be a little more specific?

Just want to find some success sooner rather than later."

Get some of Lee's liquid alox lube. Cast your bullet out of the "soft" lead. Let them age 7 - 10 days unless the lead is pure lead or a lead/tin alloy with no antimony. Tumble lube the bullets as per Lee's instructions and let dry thoroughly between and after the last coat. Probably no need to size.

Get some Bullseye powder and load them over 4 - 6 gr. You need to test that range in 1/2 gr increments to find the best accuracy. That will give you "success" sooner than later.

If you must try one of the powders you have try the Unique; start with 5 gr and work up to 8 gr.

No filler or wad is needed with either powder.

Thanks Larry. I have range scrap, pure lead, lino, Coww and Tin. I think there is some Lee alox at my dads. I could also Hitec coat some.

I will take your advice and get some bullseye to start with. Thanks

I've had success with PC and loading with 4227. They're so much fun and you'll really enjoy the gallery loads.

I load mine with 12 grains of Trailboss for 1350fps from a 26" 1895 cowboy.
I cast from 97/3 and has pushed that bullet-alloy-powder combo to 1600fps (16-17 grains) with no ill effects.

I cast those from my wheel weight. Lubed with a hard lube and shot over Trail Boss they did a very nice job.

I use soft lead and HiTek coat mine. 10 gr. of Unique pushes them out just under 1,000 fps in my Marlin 1895 SBL. They shoot right on at 50 yds with my scope setting for the heavier 45-70 loads.
