    Remington 788 7mm-08, new to me.

    Picked one of these up today for pretty cheap. Curious if anyone here is shooting one with cast? I've had a few 788s over the years but never a 7mm-08. I've never owned a 7mm of any kind. These only came in carbine length (18 1/2") barrel. I'm wondering how this round and short barrel might handle lead. Last thing I need is another caliber to load for. Depending on replies, I may consider it for trade fodder depending on what I find out about it.

    7mm does well with boolits. Just use 7x57 data.

    That is most likely the most accurate 7mm you can get for the money. The 7-08 made its debut in the 788 and the 700 Varmint Special in 1980. Shoot it - I'll bet you like it.

    Ammo is scarce and all I've found around me was $32/34 a box. Proud of it.. Next time I get to a bigger city I'll look for some cheaper fodder. Hate to set up for reloads without at least trying a few boxes of factory in it. At that price I could buy a die, brass and mould for the cost of 2 factory boxes of ammo.. )-:}

    Don't use 7x57 data! There is 7-08 data available. It should be a good shooter. I had one in a Remington model 7 with 18 1/2" barrel. Try the RCBS 7mm-145-SIL. It should work well for you.

    The 7-08 is perfect. That's why I don't own one. It replaces a wide range of cartridges from .243 to .30-06. Better just send it to me to try out.

    I bet you will like it , my Savage Striker in 7mm-08 shoots sub MOA with boolitz or Jacketed . My pet load is 30.0 gr. Of IMR 3031 under a 160gr. Lyman sil. Boolit. Reloader 7 does well also

    Had an opportunity to trade the 7mm-08 for a Savage in 6.5-06. The savage is nice but I don't think I want to give up the 788 for it. I think the short barrel 788 in 7mm would be the better cast shooter especially with fast powders (cheap).

    Never, ever, trade a 788 for a Savage. Unless the Savage is a 99.
    IMHO.

    Brass is easily formed from .308.
    The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

    Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

    Brass is also easily formed by firing .243 ammo thru it- only good if the .243s are free. But you can neck .243s up easily to make 7-08 brass. I make .358 from .308 in one pass.

    Anything based on the 308 case will form right up to the 7x08. The 145 RCBS is a very good bullet in a 7mm and the 140 Hornady SPFB is also a very good jacketed bullet in the 7mm. The list of powders that work with the 7x08 is as long as your arm. Every powder maker has several powders that will excel with the little 7mm case. Nice thing is you can use modified data for the 308 through the 260, just lower and work up. The 7x08 is a nice versatile rifle to have in your gun cabinet.

    With bullets lighter than 140 grain the 7-08 about duplicates the 7x57. With heavier bullets it comes up short because the longer & heavier bullets seat too deeply with the short 7-08 COL.
